A friend of mine stumbled onto this website while searching for my personal webpage.

http://www.91project.com/projects/3dmodeling.jsp (http://www.91project.com/projects/3dmodeling.jsp)

Looks like someone's hijacked some of Caligari's December Image contest (http://www.caligari.com/gallery/ImagesGallery/2005/dec/default.asp) entries and stuck them at the bottom of their site, giving the impression that I (Dennis Hawthorne) and a couple of others (Matthew Salisbury and Chris Kufahl) are employed with these people?

What's more, I've been credited for Matthew's tentacled eyestalk creature and he has been credited with my clown.

I did not see where this site was affiliated with Caligari in any way (even if it were, I realize that by giving Caligari the image, I've turned my images over to Caligari for their own use as they see fit, but would hope that it wasn't tied to something fraudulent like this).

Thought I'd stick a feeler out here before contacting the site owners...

You've certainly got to give them credit for being 'clowns'.
Time to warm up the Nasty-Gram machine and fire away.
Dropping a little note to their existing clients as a friendly reminder of what kind of company they are dealing with could be the icing on the cake.
EDIT: This is assuming they actually have existing clients.

What a bunch of slimeballs. Figures, don't it? Makes you wonder what kind of service they provide their paying customers too. Reminds me of those scammers on ebay.

There is a Jamaica, NY 11432..... Amazing. What's the odds they got permission to use the images on their website? :(

Perhaps Caligari might issue a stern anti theft warning to all before entering the galeries, for all the good it would do  . Is there no way to watermark imagery?:(

Yes there is. This (http://www.digimarc.com/watermark/mypicturemarc/) is the only 1 I know of, though there are probably others. I haven't really looked into the details of it, as it's not something I need yet, but I remembered seeing it when you asked about it.

I've used Digimarc before, at least until it became a pay service.
I'm cheap, uh, I mean thrifty, I admit it.
You can create your own logo/watermark and paste it on every image you post to the web.
There is a list of many companies that provide digital watermarking software and solutions located HERE (http://www.watermarkingworld.org/companies.html)
Unfortunately, it seems for every measure, there's a way around it- it's like the old adage: Locks are for honest people.

No idea, you'd have to check for each seperate type of watermarking.

I didn't see any models or images in the link you provided. Did they remove them?

Yep. They're gone now. The trail of slime, however, lingers on...

I still saw them there when I navigated through the site manually (use the 3D model button on the side menu).

I have a feeling they are trying to lie low currently and don't want any stick from caligari, as their FAQ/HelpDesk section of their site keeps giving me a tomcat internal server error. Maybe this is intentional!! :D :D :D

PS - fortunately for us you can still get to that section by refreshing the error 500 page.

What makes the error look suspicous is that if you look carefully it says there is an error in line 277 of the jsp. file. Was this line deliberately altered? We shall probably never know.

The real point and the entire goal was to get the images removed. Goal achieved. End of story.... unless you want to spend several thousand dollars pursuing a lawsuit that doesn't go anywhere.

I'm trying to tell you that they are NOT removed. They no longer exist specifically on the page that you linked to; however (as I said) simply hover over the "Services" tab on the left-hand menu, scroll down to 3D models and click on it. At the bottom of the page are the same images.

They are not removed.

Actually, entering the gallery only gives Caligari rights to use the images in promotional material - ie our web pages, emails, brochures, box art etc, with credits of course.

It would not give things the right to turn up on some other company's web page.

I've never heard of this site until now, not sure why they are using this imagery. This use of imagery is an infringement of copyright - they need to have sought the artist's permission to use this image. For this use, where the reader assumes this is the artwork created by the company, I doubt an artist would agree to this particular use. Even if they did, some financial return might be expected.

I recommend that the artists get in touch with the site and ask why they are using your images without permission.

HTH!

Tom

Thanks much, all.

I just shot off an email informing them that they were using copyrighted materials (naming the links and sites where appropriate), and asking them why they were using these images without the authors' consent. I'd actually started to do this earlier before it was pointed out that the images had been removed, but we that now see they're just "relocated"...

Perhaps they'll be moved again ;)

It's obviously a new site (only several weeks old, as evidenced by bill's post - thanks for the research!), but it might not be getting off to a very good start.

I'll keep you posted if I get a reply, but I somehow doubt that will happen.

And thanks for the clarification of Caligari image usage, TomG.

I believe you, I believe you. :) I'm still not seeing it though. 3D modeling was where I checked yesterday. Not sure why I can't see it. Have they taken them off yet?

This harkens back to the ebay thing where someone "painted" a version of a TS community members work and sold it.

Ah, yes, it's been removed yet again ;)

Perhaps they got my email and pulled it?

I checked it out, and it looks as though it's been removed (or just moved). While they're at it, they should remove the word "professional" from their header as well.
