Want to participate in testing of the new character animation tools slated for TS7.1? Here is your chance:

Create a nice 2-3 min 3D recording and post it here. Alternatively you can post a procedural animation or an activity or interactive scene but we mostly are interested in 3D recordings, which we plan to use for launch of truePlay in two weeks or so.

I will personaly select best 3D recordings and we will invite their authors to TS7.1 Beta program if they are so inclined. Of course existing Beta testers are welcome to create 3D recordings too:)

So when you say a "3D recording" does this mean not a rendered animation, but a 3D scene file with 2-3 minutes of keyframed animation?

2-3 minutes? That's a lot of keyframes. Wait, I have 6.6, I've found no way to create and/or export such a thing. :(

No, TS 7 has a macro recorder where you can record and save whole scene recordings which play back more like 3D movies. Or on specific objects where the macro recorded can be applied to other objects. These then can be saved out and shared with other TS7 users, or played back in the new truePlay viewer mentioned by Roman.

So I guess that us older TS users are effectively shut out of this all together?

Yes, a 3D Recording is a very different thing from a regular animation. Regular anims (avis, wmvs, etc) are not what is required here.

The idea of a 3D recording compared to a regular animation is rather like Flash is to a regular animation - rather than record the graphics, you record the procedures to generate them.

So imagine a course, only rather than watch a recorded image, you simply play back the steps in tS and see it happen in your own copy of tS. You are able to stop it at any point, and start changing an object that is in the recording for yourself. And so on.

And that is what we want to see for this contest - a creative use of 3D recordings!

I don't know if they're still offering the payment plan, but if they are it makes things a lot easier - that's how I got my proTeam membership [well, that & the exchange rate :)]

Here's something I've been saving for a special occasion:

I dunno how to use the recorder very well, so let's see how this turned out...

[EDIT] Only the attatchmet uploader seems to not be working, so I guess I'll try again later. :\ :(

The forum won't let me post the recording. Um, Roman, may I send it to you via an e-mail address or something? (This is one of few projects I'm actually relatively proud of :p )

Maybee Noko could show us an example of one he made.

Has anyone encounter it playing back slowly because of the LE or using nurbs because I did a 3d recording making a house which took some time since I didn't really plan it and it came out well. I even have the ceiling fan spining but I play it back and it took aout 20mins! It doesn't seem to make much since and many minutes were added because of the LE slow it down. I'll be testing it again but if all fails I'll just make the house interactive!

Not to long ago I just started trying to figure out the LE itself like scripting and the macros. I hope to see the macros work on the model side unless there is just plans to make the tools availiable in player.

I'm really looking forward to the developer guide:cool:

oh by the way for those who have tried it, how big are your recorded file(s)?

Forgive me if this sounds naive as I'm new to the 3D world.

but...

Can't you put the point of view from several cameras (like real movies do) in a 2D film and get the same effect as you would inside a 3D computer viewscreen?

If you want interactivity, then you would just make a mapped and masked background, much like is done in sessions with flight simulators (the real ones, not the game ones.)

Would this suffice or is the contest looking for mouse feedback mechanisms with a mouse/controller device like a game?

I don't think we are capable of doing Holosuites like Startrek yet, which is a goal of 3D. Sorry, just watched Startrek. :o

Or is Roman looking for an associated library of objects, textures and the like with their paths so he can point out the advantages of the new software?

I guess what caligari is looking for are people who have experience with LE and makro recording to create procedural (maybe interactive) animation.

Oh, I see.

So, it's like in paint programs where you run the Python Script recorder and it records each and every move? Then you can play it back to do a specific task.

Yeah, WinRAR can be a little tricky sometimes. It's a shame Methusela doesn't have any hosting/webspace anywhere or he could have just uploaded it there. Luckily, I do. So here's his file in 1 zip file.

Methuselah's breakdancing thingy (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/misc/Breakdancer%20full.zip)

PS - I hope it works, I didn't actually try the .rcd file as I wasn't sure what to do with it. :o

LOL, that is really good :). I couldn't see it either, thanks Alien for making zip file. Methusela great job, hope to see more, might want to turn on shadows or use a spotlight or two.

My coffee must not have kicked in yet :) , but how do you use/load the file?

I'm sure I'm missing something incredibly obvious here. ;)

Thanks!

Ah, the coffee kicked in. :) Also, RTM helps too.
In case anyone else has a problem, right click on the 'open record toolbar' flyout icon, and then you get the 3D record toolbar where you can import, export, etc.

Well I downloaded the three files ok (you have to dl all three for the scenario to work). You r-click on first file and extract it; it will open other two and create the one single file: Breakdancer full.rcd , which ends up as 8142KB. Image attached shows the "Import Record" icon. You use this icon to "load" the recording file: Breakdancer full.rcd

I had no problems downloading or seeing this recording. Methusela and I worked in background to ensure it worked ok.

This recording file is called THE MATRIX (ftp://forums.caligari.com/hik9/shares/mrbones/matrix.rar)

Load recording in player. press play and character will jump.
You can move your camera while hes jumping to view him at all angles.
Drag and drop shaders to the character while hes jumping.
Note: may also react to recordable physims of lights and particles in realtime.

To go to RecPref:

1. In LE come out of scene or go up the hierarchy to system level
2. Open "Preference" object up
3. Panel for recorder called "RecPref" will be there where you can adjust speed and a number of other items

I like to uncheck "Streaming during record and replay" which will allow going reverse in recording and then forward without having to reset the scene.

Thanks Noko, Cheers

Norm provided some excellent support to help me get the recording on here, props to him!

Thanks for the response everyone, I've had that animation for a long time, it's going to be in a special project I'm working on. I'm hoping to finish it by Summer, so I'll keep everyone posted.

I'm looking forward to new character animation tools more than anything else in TS7 (and 7.1). It'd be really cool to be on the beta team for it.
