I know that each version of truespace probably changes alot, and maybe this is a stupid question. I read that the south park reloaded movie was made entirely in version 4.2. I own version 4.3. Can 4.3 do everything that version 4.2 could do?

Next Question...I recently downloaded version 7.6, and seeing as I am a beginner to 3D, the interface confused me. Would anyone recommend that I first learn how to use version 4.3 and then work my way up to 7.6?

Yes, TS 4.3 is the same program as TS 4.2 - it is only a version upgrade.

So TS 4.3 can do all that TS 4.2 can do. TS 7.6 can do everything that TS 4.3 could do - if you keep into model side.

On you second question - that depends if you want to use model side or workspace. I don't like workspace so I don't even use 7.6 - I use 6.6 which is the same as 7.6 modelside (but without all the bugs that the bridge between workspace and modelside adds).

Since you don't have the latest "clean" modelside version, I would recommend you to use TS 7.6 and choose between workspace and modelside. TS 4.3 has some rather bad behaviors if I recall correctly.

Last - please post these questions in the roundtable forum, the tech forum or "TS6 or older forum" since this forum actually is reserved for work in progress. :)

Given the fact that every point upgrade brought besides more stability also a few more features, yes, should be possible.

4.3 was nice. I would not recommend to start with 4.3 though. You would miss too much needed functionality. Decide for one side of the 7.6, be it Modeler or Workspace, and start there.

If you use TS 7.6 you can work in modelside and turn the bridge off.

You can also customize it so that it looks almost like TS 6.6...;)

What is the bridge and how do I turn it off?

At the right of the screen you have a tab named setting. The bridge is on the desktop windows.

One last question. What does it mean when I turn off the bridge. What does that do?

If animating, I'd recommend the workspace side. The new bones are MUCH better than the old bones, and are also totally different (so time spent learning the old bones won't really help much if you decide to move to the new ones).

The bridge moves data between the two sides of the program, think of it as a literal bridge with the traffic being data and objects etc travelling back and forth. The "Model" side is in effect tS6.6 embedded as a giant plugin, there for legacy reasons. The "workspace" is the new side, totally re-written code sharing nothing in common with the old code, to allow things like an entirely new bones system, improved point editing tools, etc.

HTH!

Bones are fun on WorkSpace side, they actually work.

This was my first animation with bones in WorkSpace, about two years ago. :)

So... the Model side is for legacy reasons... But Virtuallight and Lightworks work only in Model side...

Does the Workspace has other included render engine than the realtime preview?

I'm not interested in animating anithing (never say never), and I don't really like the Workspace interfase... and I don't have a clue. I'm really a newbie strugling to learn V7.6. Is it worth it to forget the Model mode and try the Workspace?

I only model simple things, still images to export them (via 3ds or cob) to another render engine, sometimes I use the included render engines.

(I know truespace is a little uncertain, but the model mode will desapear?)

tS 7.6 is very different from tS 4.3. Caligari is currently working to translate all the tools in the 6.6 old style to the new version 7 Workspace, which is greatly superior in its real-time rendering capabilities, plus its stronger rendering as a whole [a 500K poly object in Workspace side is MUCH smoother than it is in model side]...

...I just wish they would hurry it up! Its kept M.E. excited for over a year now.

OK, back on topic, many of the stuff in 4.3 is now on the model side in a refined but possibly buggy [or at least is for me] fashion. The Workspace side will be more polished. Much of the stuff you may wish to do is possible on the workspace side unless it involes NURBS, curves/splines, or Metaballs.

Workspace is not completed yet. Model side is as complete as any previous version of TS.

Learning Model side would give you a more complete solution and upgrade from TS4.3 ... but it will disappear for some future TS.

Learning Workspace gives you an incomplete tool but it is the future of TS and has some good features now. Some people (who don't work for MS/Caligari) like Workspace, others refuse to use it due to bugs, instability, and graphic card compatibility problems, or they don't like the interface. I like its potential but I'm waiting for it to be finished before using it for projects.

The bridge connects the two sides so that some things can pass between them.

Workspace does not have a renderer other than real time DX. Vray was available as a plugin but is not now. Some people are developing connections or exporters to other renderers -- dribble connects TS to 3Dlight (isn't it?), another is for yaf(a)ray.
