I could have swore I had posted this WIP thread already, but can't find it. At times I really am the 'absent-minded professor', so if anyone sees the past thread I thought I started, please enlighten me
Anyway.
This will be one section of a larger cave system. The area is called 'Needle Chasm', but I liked the above title I came up with since it can also relate to the title of the challenge; 'dreamscape/ scaryscape.
...to reach the light on the other side (so as to continue deeper into the cave), one has to figure out how to get past this chasm area.
Here's a pre-vis sketch, then the 'block' I will be sculpting on, and then a quick view of how I will mainly go about the business of creating the 'needles' (natural land formations). |

I'm anxiously waiting on pins and needles !!!
.....Lost in this mystery of darkness, I see a light ahead. Could this finally be an end to my nightmare ? How can I get there ? |

You got the right idea Mr. 3d. My personal works always include symbolism, so in this case, well, as the story unfolds I'll explain more.
So, this is a few new pics on my progress. The Red plane is lava, which I'll be moving slightly up and down if animated to show the ebb and flow of the lava rivers.
The full view shot will be the basic height angle that the final render will be. - You come through a narrowish cave tunnel and then your eyes gaze upon this expanse. On the other side, ... the Den :) (but one won't know this till they get across; the main character is on his way to slay the 'dragon' ). |

Thank you marcel. Will check that out.
Haven't had much time to post much, but here's a small update.
I started a new 'sculpting block' to see if I can do it faster or easier. I found that doing one 'tip' extrude on a polygon, then stretching a good amount, THEN doing 1 level of SDS seems to be the most efficient way (when I posted the last pics, I forgot that when one transfers from Workspace side to Model side it 'flattens history', which permanently added more topology; but I wasn't ready for that yet, so that's why I had to start with a new model) |

Just playing around to get a feel what it will look like. Will add more 'needles' to the near sides to give a greater feel of expansive terrain. (in the animation, the warrior will have a fight with the dragon in the air, thus needing a lot of 'air space')
The light platform in the foreground will be where the character will stand and look out to the other side. (the dragon will fly at the camera from that light in the distance)
This will be my first real try at using the lighting settings and various tools for it (I now see why you folks need am outside renderer.) -- In simple terms,... why does one use 'volumetrics' actually? |

Wanted to show what I started with for the final render. Just didn't have time to play with the shaders and maps. Have to learn more about what render settings can do. |

To simulate dusty/foggy/misty air.
Want visible beams of sunlight streaming through an opening?
Volumetrics is for you.
Got time to kill?
Volumetrics is for you. |

I think I see a Dragneye waaay in the back asleep. Your scene is coming along nicely and look forward to Monday's full disclosure.
Your going to apply SDS to the stalagmite and stalactites right? I see it applied in earlier examples.
Nice to see you back in the Challenges too.:) |
