I just downloaded truespace 7.6 for free. I'm new to truespace and I have a 2 questions.

1. I read about a discontinued product called gamespace. My question is...can truespace 7.6 do everything that gamespace could do?

2. The interface in 7.6 is very confusing and slows my computer down. Is there any way I can make the interface more basic like the older versions.

1. I don't know, never used gameSpace but I think 7.x can do all that gS could and more. I think there were some import/export game-specific file format things that gS was better suited for. However, I could be talking out my rear end since I never used gS.
Pretty sure there are plugins and workarounds to deal with it.

2. For an elderly computer running tS7.x there are a few things you can do to speed things up.

Model side is basically version 6.6 working as a giant plugin.
Workspace is the rebuilt core of the program, and represents the future direction (maybe).
The 'bridge' sits between and shuttles data back and forth.
The bridge can be turned on or off depending on which 'side' you're working in, then turned on to synchronize when you switch from one to the other.
It's generally faster running with it off- and only turning it on before you move from Model to Workspace and vice-versa.

Reducing the complexity of the realtime display can also greatly increase your speeds. Click 'File/ HWsettings' and experiment with setting the shading quality lower, turning off shadows, etc. there.
This should speed up the operation during modeling.

Think of tS7.x as a transitional fossil caught in mid-evolution between two species.

trueSpace7.6 as the missing link? Now that's an analogy I hadn't heard before!

tS7.6 does all that the core of gS did and more, as mentioned. gS did come with a set of plug-ins, most of those were import and export related. Some of that has been brought into tS natively (eg improved X format), but not all. Some of those were modeling plug-ins, and most of that functionality can now be found in tS natively (eg edge loops), but again not necessarily all.

So there will be differences - but any model you could have made with gS, you can make with tS7.6. Now there is a much better bone system too, so if you are looking to make characters etc, then tS7.6 is a much option than gS was (though you'd have to export to X format at the moment to get into a game, with all the hazards that go with the "non-standard standard" that X format is).

People can offer advice on best workflow to get from tS to your engine of choice, just ask, see if anyone else is using that engine already.

Advice on improving speed on an older machine (and tS should run fine on any GPU that is 4 years old in design or newer) is the same as previously given, so I won't repeat it here :)

Thanks!
