I wanted to start playing around with Yaf(a)Ray a bit, so I dug up an old scene that I never finished. The modeling could be better, but I'm just going to use it to test rendering in Yaf(a)Ray. I want to play around with the materials and lighting and such.
So here's the first test render, just starting to add some materials. Comments and crits always welcome. :)

Cool. Good to see some renders coming out.
Check your geometry/materials around the windows, since you're getting a bit of "glow".
Looking good. Adding the black to the keys and baseboards will really help. |

Thanks Jack. Yeah I guess I had some floating geometry. Didn't notice it until the render.
Here's a small update. Still getting a slight glow under the window. Will have to look closer at where that's coming from.

Part of the reason I picked this scene to test with is because there are a lot of objects. Each key on the piano is a separate object. So there are a lot of objects being rendered with a lot of materials. It does render without any trouble at all, so that's a good sign. :)
It would be nice if we can work in instanced materials so it doesn't have to write a new material for every single object. I have a lot of repetitive textures for the piano keys. Instanced materials would be much more efficient. We'll have to look into that. ;) |

The updates are already making a big difference. :)
Heh, I don't think we need to worry about geometry. Rayman's Lamborghini XML file is 215306 lines ...
Cool thing is that memory usage for Yaf(a)Ray looks to be relatively small even when crazy settings like 30 Million photons are used. :D |

Thanks. :) I'm using an area light just outside the window. |

Thanks guys. :)
This is pretty much the default settings. The only real change I made was to the lighting method. I changed that to Photon Mapping. I have an area light just outside the window that is slightly larger than the window. It's power is set to 1.5, and the samples to 128.
So not a bad result with only slight adjustments to the default settings.
Played around with the textures a bit more. This render I added a little diffuse glow in post as well as the shrub outside the window.

Yeah, quality looks good. Baseboards definitely help and make the room look less like a textured cube now too.
Are you planning to add more furniture or maybe go with the barren lonely look? Perhaps an old piece of sheet music lying on the floor might be a nice touch?
Depending on what direction you decide this piece might already be almost done. ;) |

Thanks. :)
Yeah, I was thinking of adding some stuff like sheet music on the piano or scattered on the floor, but then when I looked at this, I kind of liked the "unfinished" look. Kind of feels like it's in limbo.
So I think I might call that particular one done for now. I do want to try some other lighting and textures though. I'm thinking next I'll try some clean, shiny textures and a spotlight. :) |

Looks very nice Dele.
I like the 'in limbo' look here.
It's like someone is just passing through the woods
and happened to find this abandoned house.
It raises a lot of questions in my mind. Who were
the family that lived here? How long ago? etc. :) |

...and were they so tiny that they've sawn the legs off their bench and sat in front of a short piano?
(Something about the scale seems 'funny') |

lol, I agree. I think the piano bench should probably be a bit taller. |
