So after my HD malfunction I was a bit bummed. I got home tonight and decided to just model some basic objects and see what I came up with.

Below is what I came up with. As always critiques are welcome. These items were modeled in workspace then using the bridge rendered in model mode. I may texture them and add more later. Since I am learning who knows.

Wow, looks nice for just "fooling around". My first fooling around was a shiny sphere :D

Taper the table legs to the bottom for a more elegant look to the table. It's just a bit chunky right now. You should be able to do it in point-edit mode.

It looks like a very good start to a picture!

Interesting happening tonight. So I get home boot up the old PC. Look over my everyday forums and then double click the Truespace shortcut. I get the familiar logo pop on my screen. I step outside to burn a cig. Back to my computer and no truespace on my screen. Odd enough but eh things happen. So I ctrl alt delete and take a peek. Oddly enough it says truespace is running. So I right click and switch to... the hourglass pops up but no truespace. Ok no worries I restart my computer and go through it again and truespace never loads. Yet it is still showing in task manager. So I'm uninstalling and reinstalling now.

Has anyone ran into this before?

I did once... I just switched to the Processes tab and ended the process. Then it worked just fine.

Uninstalling and reinstalling did the trick.

I did another test render just to see what I could come up with.

Added two directional lights took it into model mode and below are the results.

I need to tweak it a bit more but not bad for a first attempt imo.

I tightened up around the window a bit so you don't see light coming from cracks in the mesh. More will come later. I have a door almost done and working on the counters/sink. Ok I had to do one more update. The basic sink.

Rather than uninstall and reinstall, you can just do the regular "delete the truespace.cfg and default.ctx" trick first. This wil revert tS to starting up just like it was just installed (so it doesnt load previous scene, libraries, layouts etc). Quite often works in this situation in case tS is firing up in some problem state.

Thank you Tom. That will help me out a lot if that ever happens again.

I have a few questions now.

1. Are there any good tutorials on Textures and UV wrapping Shaders etc?

2. Is the manual available anywhere online withought having to download it.

I am at work and want to read more of it while I am here. Due to restrictions by our IT department downloading is not an option.

3. Is their a way to hide models so it easier to work on individual ones?

Say hide the table and all things on it? Up till now I have been creating each item as a seperate object and mesh((I hope I am using the right terminology)). Example... Both windows you see are two seperate objects named Windows_L and Windows_R.

So adding and positioning things is getting a bit difficult in the cramped space. Is this the best way or would it be better to create it as a new object and then save and import into the scene?

I guess what I'm asking is for workflow tips.

Thanks for any tips and hints. I hope I'm not bothering you all with these questions.

Answer to 1:

Using an Image mask (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/forumdisplay.php?f=71) from me

how to create a vitraux (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=5629) from Prodigy.

Multilayer Textures (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/forumdisplay.php?f=66) from X-PaX

Answer to 2: no, you have to download it.

Answer to 3: Yes. You look like you are in Model space, so you select an object - hit the settings tab on the top right. Click the button to show object attributes and can make it transparent/invisible from there.

Thank you for all the answers.

Actually I model in workspace then using the bridge go to model to render it.

Sorry for the confusion I should have been clear on that.

ok - wish I was at home and not in the office because it's been a while...

to hide objects in the Model side, you right-click on the big arrow icon and bring up the object attributes. Then you click the more settings button (I think) and you will see another button for render attributes. That is how you can make an object disappear.

Or you can go up to the top left of the Model space and there is a layers setup. Just put the objects you don't want to see into a different layer and turn that layer off.

Thank you. Making those invisible helped a lot.

So below is another test render. However I added another light and was switching back to model view to see how it came out and crash.. So I lost the work on the door and doorknob. One of these days I will learn to save.

So I am back to creating the entire wall again. Cutting out the door frame creating the door and the door knob. No big deal just teaching me good lessons on saving.

EDIT: Turns out that the crash was a blessing. I tried a different approach to the door frame and ended up with a cleaner mesh and 1/2 the troubles.

In Model I have a hotkey/shortcut key set to toggle object invisibility.
(To set a Model hotkey, hover your cursor over the tool, hold Control key and then press F1)
You can hotkey the 'invisible' checkbox. Thus repeatedly hitting the hotkey will quickly hide or reveal the object.
There is an 'Unhide All' icon in the Object Tool flyout to make all invisible objects visible in one go.

Unfortunately in Workspace it's not so simple and you'll have to go digging in the Stack.
Look for Setting/ 'Show Object Attributes', then on the 'Object Render Attributes' switch from 'Default' to 'Advanced' and finally tic the 'invisible' box.
Clunky in comparison!

Ok two quick updates before bed tonight.

I spent more time reading then anything else tonight but I still got some accomplished. I will finish up the sink area tomorrow night most likely and start putting an overall theme to the picture. I have an idea or two in the works.

Then this weekend when I am off work I am going to try to learn texture basics and wrap some of the models up. Any critiques or comments are welcome.

Which is why I added that function to my Link Editor Navigator.

I'll work on adding the Unhide All button. Presently the Unhide button only works with selected objects.

You can also use layers, or on workspace side the Layerz plug-in and I believe there was another workspace layers plugin too just recently. These will let you group objects into layers (eg table and all on it, bookcase and all on it, etc) and then show or hide the entire groups.

The Texture University course is based on the Model side, but teaches principles of UV and Texture mapping (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/newTextureCreation.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Master ).

That is a very useful plugin and has been a huge time saver for me!

Thank you Dele for creating it.

I updated the sink area re-did the windows and walls. I then took a few minutes to add some plates to the scene. I still have to model the faucets and hardware and figure out what I'm going to do to tie the scene together.

Any opinions or suggestions are welcome. This has been a great learning experience and once again thanks to everyone that has helped and made suggestions.
