First off hello all.

I am very new to 3d modeling and after looking around the net decided on truespace to learn the ropes. I have watched videos and decided today would be a good day to start actually getting my feet wet. I decided on a low poly head followed by the body. In the end I am wanting to texture and do a basic animation.

I am hoping to use this project to learn the basics of truespace and 3d modeling in general. Perhaps one day to move on to a different platform depending on what happens with truespace. I am really enjoying this program and hope that Caligari and MS will give us information as to the future of this useful tool. Anyway I ramble on to much.

The below head is what I have so far. It has taken about an hour to get to this point but I am stuck on the ears. Any advise or critiques would be welcome.

EDIT: I'm not sure how to tell how many poly's this is. I remember a thread and will edit with the count as soon as I find it.

EDIT: Found it. So far it's 464. I am shooting for around 2000 to 2500 for the entire model. So this may need a bit of editing to reach that goal. However It is a learning experience so I will see what happens.

Looking good so far,do you need all those edges around the mouth and chin?

Hi there, and welcome.

Pretty good start so far. (I always get stuck on the curve of the cheeks; how much and exactly where to tweak so I get the right curve equal to my face)

I have a great book that shows the basic starting head mesh should look like; ie: where and how many lines should be. will have to find it, as it shows how to make a human from start to finish, including the subject of the ears.

will get back to you on this.

Good luck with this.

Don't forget all the free courses, in case you haven't had a look at them yet - this one is using the older toolset (which you'll find in the Model side), but the principles are pretty much the same for working in the workspace also:

http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/NewCharacterModeling.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Older

There are other modeling courses there which might also be helpful. It's looking pretty good already though, please keep us updated as you work on it!

HTH!

I appreciate the comments so far. I am doing some twinking to the chin right now. I will post an update later tonight.

One question. When doing low poly models is cutting in the nose and fully fleshing out the ears necessary? I am going to add the eyes and mouth interior so I was going to cut back on the poly count a bit but not fleshing them out as much.

Ok, here's what I have.

The way he does it is to build the ear seperately and then attach.

Hope this helps

Nice model so far! However:

I am shooting for around 2000 to 2500 for the entire model.

It looks like you'll probably have a lot more polygons than that. Especially if the model is meant for a game where it would need to be triangulated. (I don't know if that's why you want the low poly count.)

When doing low poly modelling, most of the detail should actually go into the texture, not the geometry itself.

Edit: What do I know though? I've never modelled a human...

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I'm in the middle of helping my mom remodel her home. Hooray for ripping up carpets and discovering original non-damage hardwood floors! Boo for my mom wanting to check all her rooms before I could go home and get some sleep.

Anyway I cleaned up the mesh a bit and collapsed the mouth. In my opinion I didn't loose to much by doing so.

Down to 296 now. What do you all think? I still need to do some work on the chin.

I haven't forgotten this but my HD had a melt down....

So I'm starting from scratch again. Not sure If I will do a head or something else. I hopefully will have some time to work on things tomorrow.

I hate it when that happens. Going along, and suddenly your projects are gone!
