this is a combination of some script from Norm's 'object information' project and some of Glen's [professorkhaos] 'LED display' script..

Special thanks to those two. pioneers into realms of scripting I didn't understand before looking at their scripts..

here is the beginning of of my digital readout widget..so far just one axis [X] of location..not sure yet if it can be located next to the object widget near your work or should be stationary. this is due to keeping the readout flat with screen docking.which seems to be the only real option I can think of at the moment..lots of issues yet to workout like the final size of the readout..

Hi Gordon!

This looks to be a very interesting project! Assume this uses "widget" techniques for the docked numbers. I need to study widgets a bit more closely when I get the chance. Also, thanks for the Kudos :)

The Caligari staff deserve much of the credit for my scripts as well. I kept bugging them with questions until I finally began to understand some of the answers. :D Besides that, I remember a day not too distant in the past where you helped me compile a "dispersion glass" shader that was causing me some difficulty to make work on other folk's computers.

Perhaps the answer to the size issue is to provide some sort of adjustment option for the display scale itself. In many cases the tradeoff between screen real estate and readability is a balancing act best set by the user themselves.

Anxious to see how this evolves!

v/r,

Glen

Most interesting script for sure :)
There should be a way to set the display to direction of camera eye. Is like the camera/eye has a normal and you point the display smack dead on to the normal. Might be option.

thanks for the suggestions guys ..

unfortunately 'look at camera' doesn't make it look at the screen straight on..
at the moment in won't even display properly...it only shows one zero and nothing else when I put it in a widget

I think scaling will be possible if I put a euler transform in each number first..

some progress. managed to get most of it working in a widget [Norm's openscene sample]..not sure why but it won't show the minus sign or first digit [depending which one it is at the time]..still much to figure out

well I finally got a working prototype..it still just in the 'openscene'widget sample so it doesn't work following the object widget or work with the view widget yet..still having problems with that .but it is scalable and the colours can be adjusted easily...Gord

Pretty wild there Stan. Looking better each time I see it.
I was sort of hoping a developer might step-in and offer some feedback on the direction of eye scenario :(

yes Norm some developer feedback would help..
my other issue is when it's put in a navigation widget or view widget it doesn't display. just ghost copies of the numbers in their original position.[all 12 dfgits, one on top of the other, same for every number position ]
I'm thinking I need to put a visualization controller and active widget node with each number position, maybe each number [12 in one position including - and .]. at the moment there is just one controller. that may also help in the location not moving with the widget or things like screen docking not having any effect.

I'm beginning to think there is a limit to widgets in ts7.11 that won't let me do this..I put a simple visualizer and static widget controller on each digit in every row and it still won't do it..here's a screen grab to show what happens

Stan, can we see latest rendition of the scenario. Perhaps I can persuade a dev to check it out for us.

ok Norm, here is the latest one..it will work in a scene, but when you add the component to a nevigation widget, which it is setup for, it gets messed up...
it's a .RsCmp so it should be imported to 'Widgets Package' or 'Widgets library'

it also works in a scene with just one simple visual controller, which is what it had in the first tests

[What I like about trueSpace7.5] is the distance feedback display in WorkSpace - it's like the old dimensioning tool on steroids

read this in the latest news on ts75 ..does this mean they already made one?

y. i made one. it is a part of general snapping & constraints mechanism.

Norm asked me many times to check your widget but currently i really have no time... may be early next week

I've made many attempts at this widget and now in 7.51 many strange things happen..

1 there is a copy of the widget in 'acrive widgets' but it doesn't work ..it also adds a coordinate system to the node[I didn't do it]
when I put another copy of my widget in 'active widgets' unconnected my widget actually works..even if the weird original one is deleted..but ts crashes on closing

my widget with 'screen docking' seems to enlarge or shrink with the zoom of the view in ortho views..so isn't actually docked  don't know how to fix that

the original version doesn't go away either it's still in the view..

many crashes working on widgets now..just trying to open a node. too may dumps to report any..
also never heard back on my last dump reports with my other widget..was told it worked but not on my machine running xp home..crashes alot..
