ReBoot Animation Project

Dyson XP and I are embarking on an animation project together, that of making an episode of ReBoot, the classic CGI children's TV series. Dyson is hard at work on an original script that will remain faithful to the series. He is also taking on-board set design, some vehicles and a handful of minor characters. I've taken on the responsibility of making all the hero characters which is quite a daunting task for me as I'm pretty useless at anything even vaguely organic. Anyone in doubt, go check out my attempt at making Wallace in the recent character SMC; there are good reasons why it didn't get a single vote. :(

Still, I've always wanted to be able to model a good character and this project is certainly going to force me to knuckle down and get stuck in to the manual/tutorials. The really big characters like Bob, Megabyte and Hexadecimal will be left to last as hopefully I will have improved my skills by the time they're needed. Please note that as there are very few high quality images on the net when it comes to Reboot, a lot of the character design will be based on the multitude of toys that are quite easy to get a hold of.

So, starting at the lower scale, the first characters to try and crack are the Binomes. I've chosen a character called Cyrus as my starting point. He was one of megabytes henchmen. The pics below are a work in progress but should give you an idea at the style and quality Dyson and I are aiming for.

As always, all critique and comments are most welcome.

Breech...admittedly I do not know anything about that show but after doing some googling (if that is a word) it looks pretty darn good so far, compared to the real one in the old show.

I don't know this character but it does look good. You should really simplify this character because your poly counts are going to be huge at this rate. (you don't need that many to make his shoes for example). When you go to Animate the real problems start to show.

JimB is the Master box modeler here (in my book) and we can all learn simplification by studying his works.

I loved re-boot!!!
You gonna do Hexidecimal? She is my favorite virus.

EDIT: oh, yes... the picture is of Cyrus. He is one of Megabyte's underlings. ;)

Thanks guys, glad you like him.

@ tahnoak – admittedly I do not know anything about that show...

What!!! Man, you don't know what you are missing. A fantastic inspiration for anybody intrested in 3D. You can get every episode ever made in a singe DVD boxed set. You should get it because your kids will just love it.

Yeah, kinda went a bit OTT being the first one and all. Like I said, I have a lot to learn. Its just so different from making robots and starships. I will probally end up make two versions of each character, one for close-ups and one for when they are in the background. And yes, jim's models are indeed excellent and I shall be studying then quite closely over the next few months.

He He. Glad someone around here is a fan of the show. As for Hexidecimal, I keep telling Dyson she is a must – no lipsynching, you change her mask. :D

Hopefully the Teletubbies didn't migrate to the States? Great program for breeding kids that can't speak and live off tubbie toast :-/

I've never seen re-boot though :o

no, Teletubbies have indeed been here and been accused by 2 separate religious groups as promoting Homosexual lifestyles. Personally, I prefer a show with a bit more maturity to it. Re-Boot has good plots and a bit of drama.

My wife and I took my daughter to see the Wiggles live in Concert here in Virginia when she was 2. We used to watch them ALL THE TIME. I have to admit some of their tunes were a bit catchy!

Yeah it is but it grows on you. We have a little family thing that we all jump up and dance when the "I'm So Happy" song comes on by The Salteens. The twins are now trying to say "Please and Thank You" because of the "Please and Thank You" song. It does have a positive message. "Don't Bite Your Friends!" :D

Reboot was the launch pad for a number of great cg artists. The company was mainframe productions based, I believe, in Vancouver.

Members of the crew went on to work on Toy Story and a number of great 3d movies.

Yay! A big thankyou and a :banana:to v3rd3 for bringing this thread back on track. :D

Interestingly, Mainframe Entertainment have now been taken over by someone called Rainmaker Entertainment who are actually in the process of making a triology of new ReBoot films, a kinda rebooted ReBoot if you will.

You can check on their progress here: http://www.reboot.com/

And for those who are curious to see the original series you can find just about every episode on YouTube these days.

One of the great things about the show for me was that each episode was sprinkled with a large dose of pop culture. There were constant references to Star Trek, Star Wars, James Bond and a whole host of others. The penguin from Wallace and Gromits: The wrong Trousers appeared in one scene whilst The X Files had a whole epiosode devoted to them. Now, for those who don't know, all the characters in Reboot are named after computer terms such as Megabyte, Dot Matrix and Hexidecimal. So when Fox Mulder and Dana Scully showed up they were called Fax Modem and Data Nully. Its great humour like that that made the show such a success.

I was a huge fan of this in my youth and it definitely ignited my interest in CGi. I have all the episodes as well as the two feature length 'mini-movies' that completed the series.

The last full series (3 I believe) was the best for me and featured (as Breech Block pointed out) many tongue in cheek homages to classic movies such as Bond and the Evil Dead; a fantastic yet creepy episode.

Good luck with this one and remember that, although some artists did go on to greater things, Mainframe were later responsible for turning out endless Action Man and Barbie Cgi movies...oh well!!

Great to hear that you were a fan Splinters. Yep, influential stuff indeed. Err, forgeting all the barbie stuff of course.:D Didn't they make up for all that dross by doing Max Steel? That was quite good - especially all the hardware.

Anyhow's, here's an update on how Cyrus is looking alongside a screen grab of a YouTube video of the real Cyrus. So, that's 1 character down, about 29 others to go.

Wow, I have distant memories of Reboot but can't remember much specific. I know Mainframe were featured in an early edition of 3D World magazine (issue no. 5, Nov 2000) which I have lying around, mainly in relation to the work on Action Man... there's a few Reboot pics in there which you might be able to use for reference but they're not great.

Thanks Weevil...for visiting the thread and taking the time to post a comment. At least I know someone is enjoying the work. Guess I'm gonna have to start deliberately putting some errors in. :D

I haven't posted any updates on this thread for ages, but rest assured it is still alive and well. unfortunately, Dyson XP who is doing a lot of the modelling and, more importantly, coming up with script, has been sidetracked with his business and is finding it hard to spare the time. Consequently, I am loathe to do any new characters in case they end up on the cutting room floor. Or should that be Recycle Bin.:D

Anyhows, today I made some mouth variations that will be used to lip-synch the binomes and have been mucking about with Cyrus to ensure there are no problems with the hierarchy so I can pass it over to Dyson for animating. I'm also thinking of doing a quick walk cycle for him just to keep my hand in.

I'll post more news as it comes in.
