Here is a Workspace version of Mesh Collapse.
Load this script into the Link Editor.
Select your object that you want to collapse and then select the Mesh Collapse's Collapse selected object button.

Warning: If you run this script on an object that has Object Material Instancing it will undo Material Instancing. It still retains the Materials but they are converted to chunks.
I have not tested this yet with Scene Material Instancing.

It would be really helpful if someone would explain in a sentence or two what "mesh collapse" means and why it is valuable.

Thanks.

Your welcome. What this does is combine all of your 3D Encapsulted object's mesh into one Mesh. This script uses tS7.6 Mesh Simplifier but with no simplication and cleans up the unnecessary remains. As an Example you can run the Simplify Mesh tool on a 3D Encapsulted object set at 100 and see the differences. HTH
