The Null object tricks tS into thinking an object is a camera and so it won't render. There is also a script to make lights and nulls invisible so the realtime won't render them. Parenting connects objects in such a way that the child objects seem like they are connected to the parent, but can have motion of their own. I was little over cautious when I wrote them and a lot of the tools make copies of the originals. The copies get changed and the original is left in place. Be careful that you're working on the right one and delete or hide the originals as you go.
