I'm looking to model some marbles and have a question about creating the color "swirls" and "mixes" that some have throughout their volume- It looks like a 3D volume shader would be needed for that? (Personally they look like a 3D fractal flame to me). I can make texture images in Photoshop, but that just rests on the spheres surface and would really like to have something that actually passes through.

I've been looking at the marble & wood shaders but none really fit what I'm looking for.

See the attached links for some reference images, if anybody has ideas/suggestion I'm all ears - or rather, eyes in this case..

Thanks!

maybe you could try to put the texture on 2 planes bisecting the the marble (a ball with a good glass shader). Might not be what you're after but might work.

Is there nothing in Shaderlab, shadermagic or Simbiont? Or are you looking for something VRay compatable?

I used Apophysis to make these... Some Fractals come out well for textures and some don't

10329

10330

10331

And some backgrounds look better with them than others

I REALLY like your idea of bisecting planes through the spheres!!!!! I never thought of that!

I have looked through Shaderlab & Simbiont and while they are 3D volumns, they aren't setup for transparency in their volumns.

For example:

Using a marble shader - you give it base & vein colors and mixing info. If you could set the base color to be transparent so only the viens would render- That's what I'm looking for.

If I knew more about writing shaders I could try and come up with it on my own, I was just hopeing there was something already available.

A volumn cloud shader would probably work (?)

If you are talking about the clear marbles with the swrily stuff inside the marble you could try Boolean subtraction.

That works much better than fractals... I even tried bisecting planes, but it just looked like bisecting planes inside a sphere. ;)

I was looking through Darktree web site and saw this on one of their pages:

It would be nice if that particular shader was available for Simbiant ;)
