Nobody's turning the crank !:D
With my interpretation of this clasic scene, abandonment is a pain that comes from deep inside. |

Being that I'm not that good with 3D modeling yet, maybe I should just "abandon" this project here and submit my first post as my MMC. The "pain inside" comes from not being able to finish what I started. |

awwww... The only way to GET good with 3d is to actually do it.
rough up the box and crank - make them dirtier and have the lid opened with just a spring... no Jack attached. Then put it in the corner of a dirty alley, and you got it going! ;) It's all part of a process... Model one thing at a time, and start putting them together, and you will give yourself so many ideas that you will have something going on for a month or two!! |

THANKS for your words of encouragement Ken (you're a GOOD guy) !
All silliness aside, I finished my MMC entry scene today about 10 hours ago (1:20 pm on 12-7-08) !:D
I guess there's no use in waiting........So, I'll go ahead and post the behind the scenes of "CAN I PLAY ?" throughout this week.
I still haven't dabbled with Jack's "Organic Modeling" course yet, nor do I know how to box model or even bevel my edges yet. So..........this scene was created by stretching, boolean subtracting, and gluing the basic shapes (primitives). |

I'm dedicating my first character to the HARD WORK that Steinie put into creating his MMC scene and saddled a FUNNY:D animation to boot ! My character is also "not a Jack".........and a Scooby Snack goes to anyone who can name him :p!
I started with this character because I knew that if I could get him looking good enough, then I could create the scene I had in mind.
First, I started with a box for the base.....copied it, shrunk, and thinned a new box for the trim. I then made a new box and textured it a separate color so that when I inserted it and boolean subtracted it, the separate color would paint the inside face. I always paint my pieces the color I want them to be as I go along, so that I can glue them together and avoid any painting issues that may arise from post texturing a glued or boolean unioned object. By texturing as I go, it also gives me a better idea of how different colors react with reflectance plus lighting on my objects. This also gives me a better sense for depth and balance when creating my objects (as I don't use any pre-drawn planes to mold and scale by.....yet ?).
The trim on my box was a learning experience for me, as I hard-headedly kept trying to copy and glue separate pieces from the main box without making a separate object or scene file. I found out that it is a dellicate matter when it comes to copying and gluing a totally separate object and keeping the gluing process from jumping over to a separate object in the scene. It was only till later did I finally do a word search to find out how to keyboard unglue (by spacekdet) !
After I muddled through that learning experience, the rest came easy (except when I tried to re-load a 29mb scene that I worked so hard to create). When I try to re-load a large mb scene, tS will teeter on the verge of shutting down. The scene will slowly come up on the Workspace side, but some of the objects can become deformed when switching over to the Model side. It is for this reason that the finished scene that I created is a one of a kind image ! Thank goodness I saved all of my separate character objects !!!;)
As I said earlier, I started with the box.....then with the body, arms, and head. I had to do the hands as separate saved objects in another scene as I needed to copy, glue, and shape different finger sizes from one cylinder.......and I didn't want to risk a rogue gluing ! I then transfered them into my "Objects Library" (right click "object library" box and import from the separate file I created just for tS in my Documents). I loaded my handless "not a Jack" into a separate scene, unloaded the hands from my "Objects Library", added them to my character, then saved him as a new object file to later add to my landscape:

Hey thanks for the "tribute"
If this was a wind up doghouse you would have had me pegged!;)
I agree Charlie would be a good name.
Always keep working those 3D projects, each one brings new suprises, good and bad. That is how I become acquainted with the new tools. Utilize one new tool in each render. Keep at it your doing great! |

After I created my "Charlie in the Box", I went ahead and worked on the landscape. I started with the NURBS Saddle to create an array of snow drifts. I then applied my texture to make sure it agreed. After that, I needed a castle. I stretched the cube, cylinder, and cone. I formed each shape and combined them on top of the hill. I applied some textures (not shown until the final render), liked what I saw, then froze (glued) my castle to the snow. More mountains were then created using the NURBS Saddle and placed behind my castle. They're shown on the wire frame but not in the following view....hate to give it all away !;)

All great toys for the nice girls and boys !!!
Another main character that I wanted to include was "a Dolly for Sue". She was abandonded by her old owner who grew up and didn't regard her anymore. The little Doll was alone and just wanted to be loved again.
I created her in a sitting pose, looking at her empty hand that yearns to be held again. I also created an alphabet block with the blue letter "C" (representing a Blue Christmas:()......

I needed a bare Christmas Tree. I took one cylinder....then narrowed and stretched it. This was my trunk. Then I relied on my favorite time saver....the copy tool ! I little while back, I was trying to figure out where my copies were going to, as I'm used to the new copy becoming offset... (my surprise when I finally moved the object to find many new copies waiting;))!!!
I then took that same cylinder and reshaped various branch sizes to attach to my tree. The final tree was then re-copied to form newly stretched trees, as I felt that I needed some extras here and there in my scene.
I then created a star for my tree out of cones. I also made a fire for environment, out of re-shaping the NURBS Saddle. As always, these new objects were then saved and added to my "Objects Library" to be inserted into my final scene. My scene was finally coming together, as the idea for a finished outcome was also being shaped during this process !

With my characters stored away as separate object files, it was now time to set up the scene ! After reloading my previously saved base scene platform, I then positioned and adjusted the lighting. I placed them in order to cast shadows from the fire pit, and I also placed one inside the fire pit. I then placed my trees in areas that I thought would enhance the scene. After my newly made arrangements, I then saved this new scene again to have a good base platform to reload in order to counter any major changes or mishaps......

I always enjoy the Forums, and have managed to create quite a few fun scenes with tS 7.6 in the past couple weeks !
I created the Burl Ives Snowman character last night. He wont be included in the scene, but I thought I'd introduce him anyway....since he introduced the "Rudolph" movie !:)
You must have your Christmas psychic "tooned" into me Steinie because:
After I inserted and positioned my characters in the places I felt appropriate for my scene, I decided to create one more character:
Bumble (the abominable snowman)!
With this character, I only created the head....and would later add the shoulders and hand once he was properly placed in my scene.......

Now, I have all of my characters and am ready to finish my scene !!!....

Absolutely great work Mr. 3d. and more importantly thank you for sharing the whole process in how you made the things that you made. That is a big help for someone like me who wants to learn more tips and tricks that may not be in the tutorials. |

very well done on this one! you captured the Island of misfit toys with perfection. The only thing missing is the dentist and Yukon Cornelius, but really I think if you put them in then it would un-balance the composition. |
