I have a few ideas so I have to settle on one before I can start posting :D

Thanks Breech... Where's your MMC win in your signature? :)

So far I have narrowed it down to two ideas (afraid neither is ambitious as some of the others I have seen).

My main problem (aside from ability) is seeing if I can do it. The idea I really like of the two will rely on transparent TGA (for blowing snow), the problem being if I add fog the transparent parts of the TGA all become opaque. So I am try/testing some methods to see if I can work around it before I start.

It is a great topic, makes it hard to decide on just one.... I settled on an expedition (mountain, snowy)... then realized there may be more fun in an artic expedition... which one... which one.... Thanks Breech for making this so hard ;)

Err...next to my SMC win...inside my head. :D

Thanks Breech for making this so hard ;)

Not as hard as trying to come up with a decent topic in the first place. :D

But seriously, sounds good Mike, the elements seem to make such rare appearences in truespace. I shall be watching your thread with great interest.

Here is one of the tents. This is in the style of the old expeditions (early 1900s). This will be one of the few tents that are still standing as they should be.

It doesn't have any of it's ropes/textures or adjustments yet.

Basically I started with a cone shape then adjusted it's shape using the edge tool. After creating a door flap (a sphere that I cut using the tent so I would be left with a matching flap to the tent door) hollowed it and cut the door whole.

Created some stakes and the main tent pole.

All this took a while because I would glue up a piece go to save and TS would freeze bringing up the save window (happened like 3 times).

Here I finished the ropes, pegs and added a flag.

I also deformed it to try to make it look like it was being battered by the wind (note the right area where it has pulled loose from it's peg), the door cover is supposedly flapping inside, the flag is bent over flapping on top.

The tent looks strange but I took it from a picture of an arctic expedition in 1913.

The snow is just to show peg depth here.

How did you make your ropes? Your stuff always looks like miniatures. Nice work.

Is that a nice way of saying my work looks like toys? :p ;) (jk)

Afraid the rope is nothing special. Just a cylinder with a rope texture I have.

(I can make it complicated if you want  :D)

Thanks

AaaaaarrrrrGGggg.....

I have been working on torn waving cloth. Seems like it should be easy. Wave up some shape and then dice it up, but as you can see it isn't like that.

Any ideas?

16669

IT LOOKS LIKE A DEAD BIRD caught on the pole!

I think the problem (beyond making it look real) is the cloth shouldn't be pooshed all up in one area it should be more spread out (like a blanket drying, but vertical).

The one on the line looks close to ok for me. I used a cylinder I cut into a cresent and then waved it up and applied a transparent TGA I made of a canvas that I cut strips out of.

If I can figure this torn cloth out I have one more tent to make before I start working on things that should be a bit more fun :D

Here is a second try at the torn up tent.

I've bent the center pole slightly (probably should have more) along with redoing the cloth.

I guess I should have mentioned... This will be on the top of a mountain scene so the winds are very strong.

Mike looks very good. Don't forget to make all of the supporting lines impacted by the wind. It looks now like only one of them is bent by the strong winds.

I think you pretty much got the lines "nailed" Mike, as far as having on line taut to counter act the opposite broke line and the side two a little slack from the loss.

Good point Mr 3d. I had not thought of it that way.

I haven't updated in a while. sorry.

I am still wanting to finish it, though as I lose time I may have to scale back what I originally had in mind.

Long time for such a small update...

A camp stove.

Lighting is terrible but it is just a standard lighting.

I sure hope I can get everything I want in.

I still got to make people (yes they are abandoning the site)...

Nice job on this. Where do you find reference images for models such as this or is this just something out of your imagination?

Thanks.

I didn't really have a reference for it. It looks a lot like a wood stove we own though :D I improvised in reducing parts for more of a "camp" look.

It turned out to look heavier than I meant it to... I'm thinking a more "tin" type texture would help it look lighter.

Mmmm, a gay boiler, now that is intriguing. :D

Seriously, great modelling Mike.

It really doesn't look like I will get anywhere near where I wanted with this.

I just have been very busy this week.

I hope to still be able to at least be able to compose a scene from what I have and will be making.

So I will share what I wanted to do :D (maybe I will continue after the MMC)

My plan was to have (foreground) the tents/camp on a rise of ground. In the background (far distant) climbers starting down the mountain. In ?mid-ground? a climber half turned toward the foreground waving (as if to the viewer to follow). I know :D very ambitious, especially for me :D

Does sound very interesting. I would not let the fact that you might not finish in time for the MMC to stop you. I hope you finish it up.

I think I need to officially crawl out of this one.

I haven't really had the time to get into it as I had wanted and last night I had to wipe my system after a failed attempt to get grub to boot linux. Thankfully I was able to recover my data but the partitions somehow had gotten all crossed up so I had to wipe.

There are a lot of great entries and I look forward to voting :)
