Okay every day now that I've had Windows Vista installed, I get Internet connection problems.

I've now associated the problem with the sleep mode.

Every time the computer goes into sleep mode and log back in later, the network connection ceases to function.

After playing around, diagnosing, repairing, crossing my eyes and generally cursing a blue streak at Windows and my computer, the connection magically gets repaired (usually after an hour or two of this episodic trauma)

Now I just have to figure out how to turn off sleep mode, so it never happens again, hopefully.

What a #@$!! bug!

(mumble, gripe, complain, growl, spit)

Unless you are a Vista User it really is enough to make one laugh...

Micro-Soft basically tried to force vendors like Dell to support only Vista on all new machines, but after literally millions of users like me complained and threatened to not buy another Dell system they changed that policy right quick.

Same for companies like HP.

I am sure it has all sorts of new goodies and what not but to force people to upgrade was a serious error in judgement.

Someday the dust will settle but the bottom line is many of us use third party apps by small companies that may not be able to commit the resources to making the apps Vista Compatible, if they are even still in business!

It to me was a ploy by MS to play hardball and force people to rely more and more on MS only applications to get things done.

Well good luck with that one, as democracy has spoken and MS has been firmly planted in their place…you are NOTHING without your users… nothing..nothing..nogthing.

I mean I so hate the MAC yet more and more find myself loving their commercials.

Well, some good and bad news on the Vista connection problems.

The good news is that I found my serial number for tS7.51 and it installed along with Vray without a hitch.

The bad news is that I had to restart my computer for Vray to take effect.

When I restarted my computer, logged in - guess what...

You got it! No connection to the Internet.!!! (asdf asdf asdf!!!!)

So, after futzing around for another 15 minutes trying to get back my Internet connection, I finally get this dialog box reset Network adapter.

Evidently, the network adapter shuts off anytime the computer goes to sleep or the computer is reset!

If microsoft was an anthropometric figure, I'd be kicking some gonads about now.

Haven't had this much trouble connecting online since the days of UNIX and 300 bps modems.

Shakes his fist and curses at Vista!!!! asdf asdf asdf!

It's obviously a "safety feature" put there for your own protection.
Like an automatic Internet Chastity Belt... or jockstrap.
Keep kicking, you'll figure it out.

LOL!!

Yeah, no doubt! Anymore of this and I'm re-formating the drive of the Vista Virus and putting on XP.

Start->Control Panel->Hardware and Sound

under Power Options:
click on the small text that says: "change when the computer sleeps"

Set both drop downs to "never"

click "save changes"

:)

BTW, sounds like you need to update a faulty driver.

Ya, changed the sleep mode already.

I'm afraid to do any updates and it will require another reset of the computer and I'll be back to square one on connectivity. :D

The only thing I know is that a number of people refer to replacing Vista with XP as an "upgrade"! I guess replacing something dysfunctional with something that works is an improvement therefore an upgrade on what you had before.:D

I'm hoping that when this PC gives up the ghost that either Vista will be a bad memory, or I can still get my new PC loaded with XP as a special request, even if I have to pay more for it.

Slowly re-loading programs from CD and backups, finding serial numbers and etc. (mumble, gripe and complain)

I thought you'd all be interested to see what a ticked-off dude looks like in Vista Hell after being up for 30 hours, losing Internet connections every time Vista sneezes.

Oh yeah, that's me in the center with the ZZtop beard and mad man scowl. :D

@#$!#$@##@d!!!!!

Okay, Vista is giving me a case of the behind....

Some how, some where, I've had several crashes which caused corrupted files.

One of them had to do with a driver with Network Adapter. So, I get on the other computer and download new drivers.

Install, nada...didn't work. After 8 hours of futzing with the Vista, I decided to do a System Restore - Didn't work.

So, i reformatted the HD and re-installed Vista. So far so good.

But now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

asdf asdf asdf asdf

I have to re-install ALL THE SOFTWARE I HAVE BEEN RE-INSTALLING FOR THE PAST WEEK!!!

Slinking back in here with some sense of relief.

I've managed to solve the network issue I think.

But now the sound has stopped working in Media Center! ASDF!!!

I just was watching TV and then reset the computer, and blah blah no sound.

ASDF!!!

I did manage to install Adobe Production Suite again for the second time, except that I accidently hit the extract button on the dialog button that was behind the dialog box for the installation!!! And it corrupted some files!!
ASDF!!! ASDF!!!

So, this means I had to uninstall, dissociate all my hard work hours and house and start all over.

I get finished then I can play...right?

Nope! Windows update pops up, I figure new computer better do it, so I did.

This requires a reset and that's when the sound went out on Media Center.
ASDF!!!

So, everything is cool and all of sudden blam!!! Adobe update pops up! 600 mb in download and installation. Figured I did this on the old computer and better do it, so I did.

(drums fingers) ASDF!!!

Got one of those TV tuner cards ya know, it has remove and everything!
Since the sound went out figured I could watch the news in closed caption leaning back having a cool one...

Nope!!

The little remote box stopped working, it no longer goes blinky blink when I press the remote control!

ASDF!!!

So, I do something simple, fix my display cause it was too small for Adobe products, had to be 1280 X 1084 for a wide screen.

So I do and everything is wtf! ASDF!!! The right part of the screen is cut off!!

So I futz with the manual monitor display controls and suddenly remember I hadn't eaten lunch or supper. So I go fix my self one of those little pizzas, hand size, microwavable.

I put it in the microwave and the cheese is bubbling just as advertised and I let it set for a minute, so as not to burn my mouth. Well, I think it was a minute I let it set. Anyways, about half way through, the center is still frozen!! ASDF!!!

ASDF!!!

I eat it anyway.

I'm chilling, then starting to relax, then remember I still have to reinstall tS7.51, Microsoft Word, Zbrush, Carrara 6Pro and blah blah blah.

The frozen pizza lump in my stomach turns into a harden dough ball and I get indigestion and not one anti-acid in the house!!!!

So...I jump in the car and head on down to the Walgreens Pharmancy to buy me some anti-acid tablets and prilosec, zoloft, valium, viagara or whatever! Just to get the stomach from churning!

On the way there I hear this cla-chunk! cla-chunk! I pull over and see that my right rear tire is almost completely flat!!

ASDF!!! ASDF! ASDF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I cancel my road trip to Walgreens Pharmancy and head to the nearest gas station and fill my tire with unknown quantities of air, because I left my air gauge in the other car! ASDF! ASDF!! ASDF!!!!

While leaning over filling the air with tire, I kick the valve stem cover under neath the car. Figured I'd just pull up a bit and get it later.

While leaning over the frozen ball of pizza in my stomach starts to erupt and I let out a big one that sounds like Mount Vesuvius at full erupt! There was substance to it as well, yech. ASDF!!:(

So, not feeling well, tire improperly inflated, decided to head on back to the house, forgetting about the valve stem cover until I get home and lock the car.

I looked at the naked stem on the tire and said, "Yeah buddy, you and me have had the air let out of today and we might as well call it a night."

Which I did, until I decided to post this message.

You are not alone in Vista Hell James.

I am still using XP, but things like the following make me happy that I am.

Sometimes it helps to read about other people's problems tho... might make you feel better

http://blogs.msdn.com/andypennell/archive/2007/06/21/installing-vista-my-personal-hell.aspx

http://www.tom-muck.com/blog/index.cfm?newsid=151

here are some people who have finished their upgrades

http://www.overclockers.com/articles1416/

this is a good site to see if you even feel like upgrading

http://www.windweaver.com/windowsvista2.htm

May be too late for you - don't know.

here is what I did today to see if I really want to do an upgrade

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx

the vista upgrade adviser tends to lock up my system, but I can usually alt-tab a few times, then hit my windows start button key on the keyboard and it comes back.

I have 3 programs that have known issues with Vista

they are

AGEIA PhysX - that stops me right there. It just will not work with vista

also

believe it or not...

Windows Messenger and MSN Explorer

their own products!

There is no data on the Creative Game Port. I haven't used it much, but still.. Creative has been out there a long time - no data?

And since it cannot work with my DVD-RW drive that I have, it says I need to get one.

So... bottom line for me is that I do not plan on upgrading anytime before the middle of next year... if then.

Basicly to make it simpe you could say:

Old computer = Keep Xp...

New computer = get Visla...

Drivers etc. is now getting up to date but it has taken a loooong time, as usual on every os upgrade.

There are two things here as well, drivers not working big hasle and then also the layout change, both needs a lot of attention but after a weekor two one gets into it again.

It's just a matter of that xp will be obsolute later on, now should be quite ok to upgrade...

then we get Office 2007 as well, total change in layout, ahhhh give us a break :D

SeYa/Ambrose...

I don't see vista being a good bet until at the very least - this time next year... maybe a bit later. My current PC works just fine with XP, but if it crashed out completely, I lost everything and smoke was coming out of the sides...

I would get a new PC with all the hardware for Vista and pay the extra $50 to have XP installed on it instead. Then about July/August next year, I would consider upgrading (downgrading?) to vista. :p
