I'm on with a "small" project for my eldest daughter.. She wanted a picture of an old school so here it is so far.

I'm really not sure about the grass and path, and possible the forground scale, I'll probably narrow the path and add a low wall along the edge.

Rendering times got very scary considering it only uses 2 lights

Any advice will be great, this is the first big project I've been able to do since i got TS stable :)

I am struggling trying to make a path as well (though yours is 1000 times better than where I am right now). what jumps up at me the most is the upwards curve of the path on each side. I would (if possible) keep the path straight and just use the grass on each of the sloped sides of the path. Or you could use the low wall as you indicated.

I dig the silhouette but are we supposed to be scared of the school or are we supposed to feel sorry for the one person who is standing there in the window at midnight?

Is there fog in the distance at the base of the school or is just very light texture? Either way I think it adds to the scene nicely.

The only other thing I can think of is that it seems awfully bright for a quarter moon (crescent, or whatever the term is). I would darken it some which would also help draw more attention to the lighted window.

Having said all that, I still think its great. :D

love the composition and the atmosphere of the image so far, apart from the grass/path issues the perfectly straight gate posts dont sit right, maybe a little extra work on the geometry to roughen them up some or add courses between the bricks.

nice work

Here's version 2

different light, wall along the path, moved the gate but not sure about it, ivy.. no moon yet

the render is only adaptive anti alias so some of the window trim is missing/vague, I'll set it away rendering before i go to bed, it took 4 hours to render the top image.. now it has the ivy to deal with lol

Nice!,

In the first pic how did you get the blending (i.e. splatting) accomplished for the pathway?

As far as suggestions go, a few "gas lamp" lights could go a long way.

thanks

I used Bryce 5.5 (which is free) to do the terrain model, i did a grey scale map 1024 x1024 to get the grass elevation, the path area true black, #101010 for where the grass goes.

then added the grass and paving and saved it as as a second image, i used a bevel effect to make the edges appear darker, in Paintshop pro

i've attacked the terrain if you are interested and the paving texture i used :)

the ivy is done with a program called Ivy Generator

I like the color of the house in the first picture.

Ok, the moon would not be visible if it lights this scene.

(And I think the phase of the moon should be corrected for 12:00)

I would change the angle of the door about 5 unto 10 degrees. It would give it more life. ( Not every thing so symmetrically)

I don't know what you want to show in this picture. But maybe a little cloak-and-dagger stile. Two persons shadows in a enlightened window. A bit fog on the floor. The gas lamps are a good idea. Somewhere a raven. Dirt on the way...

Nice job nigec. Very impressive. I am partial to dark scenes so this is right up my alley.

I am not crazy about the ivy right there. Maybe show a little more of the wall on the right hand side and have ivy partially obscuring a brass sign with the name of the school. Also, I completely agree with having a gas lamp. I think one on each side of the entranceway would be great. Right now everything is focused on the school. When I look at the image I go right passed everything else. If there were some lights on the wall it would force my eyes to check everything else out.

I can't imagine a render time that long. I get antsy when my stuff takes 5-6 minutes to render. Then again I am not in the mega poly level yet.

the gas lights sound like a brilliant idea, all i got to do is model them lol

the focus was supposed to be on the building, thats what my daughter wanted, but i think it would be a lot better with more foreground, at the moment the gate is getting lost amd the wall still looks very wrong

The ivy on the floor strikes me as strange. You wouldn't just have a tiny little patch of un-cared for grounds and if it's a school it'd be walked over daily. Having 'some' up the wall would look better as well as being more logical in my opinion.

The bricks either side of the path look better than no edging but wouldn't they be the other way round (ie, lengthways down the path) and possibly not so large. Having them the way they are not only uses more than the other way but makes the scale look very off.

I'm liking watching this develop, it has much potential.

I'm going to take out its present terrain, wall etc and re do it as i can go back with the camera as there is no ground, also i need to sort out the far corners of the building as its only modeled to where the camera can see.. i just started on the gase lamps I'll post a picture later on

Thanks all, i may be some time lol

she's did her first year at Uni as an art student, BUT she's more a plant life and bugs and not really into 3D design.. I don't mind doing it because i need to get my head around 3D 360 scenes for games anyway ;)

interesting mood... many possibilities...

you could enhance the fog & contrast. It's also a good motive for simple black white photo.

Or you create an infrared photo-like result but here you would need to change some colors (green-chlorophyll becomes white) etc.

edit: ... and wow the clock is huge :)

the black n white looks really cool

I never thought about doing it that way, nice one ;)

The reference picture had a huge tower, with really large stained glass windows and a more elaborate roof, the clock was my way to fill some otherwise empty space :o

I agree that the B&W looks great. Good idea.
