I think it is a great start. The turret looks good. It will be interesting to see what you do to alter the flatness of the top part of the chassis. |

Its already pretty much there only the paint job looks to clean.
That thing needs some messing up !

Hi Maldrachen. First of all, I love the model. I think it's a great concept and even in it's early stages I can see this is going to turn out to be something quite special. Specifically, I really love those tyres, you certainly get a feel that this thing can dig in and get about some dodgy terrain. I also think you have done a great job on the designed of the weapon system and think you have come up with a real cool looking turret\barrel.
That all said, if your looking to take this model further, you really need to take a step back and ask yourself quite a few design questions.
For example, the antenna is placed in a position that would stop the turret from rotating 360 degrees. Now if you look at it again from a designers point of view, it would either be placed at the highest point to aid better signal reception or at the rear of the vehicle so it would a) be better protected from enemy fire and b) by and large the rear of the vehicle would always be pointing back to its control centre and thus again help with signal reception. In addition, there would normally be 2 antenna types set to different frequencies to help avoid signal loss and jamming\Electronic Counter Measures.
The lights look great but again why are they there? How does your ROUAV see? It would probably have thermal or electro optics therefore it wouldn't need lights. If the vehicle needs lights to be able to travel on roads during peacetime then they would need to comply to current legislation and therefore have the full compliment of indicators and headlamps etc.
The vents\grill at the front again looks quite good but why are they there. If it is to suck in air to cool internal electronics then its current location would suck in a lot of debris in addition to being vulnerable to small arms fire. If it is to vent hot air from the internal electrics, then venting all that heat at the front would give the vehicle a bigger thermal signature and make it more prone to detection. You need to ask yourself where all these key components are located within the vehicle and then model the outside accordingly.
Another example of this “knowing the layout” is have you thought about what ammunition your weapon system fires? If for example its a 20mm cannon, then where is all the ammunition stored and how do the empty cases get ejected once fired?
As I said at the start, I really love this model and to me it has real great potential. My comments are in no way trying to make you despondent or discourage you but just to make you think a bit more how you go about adding your detail.
Hope all this is of some help and am really looking forward to see how you progress with this. |

ooh! that would require texturing ack! shiver!

thanks Breech i can always rely on you for some great weapons feedback, the initial image was just me messing around with modelling parts so nothing was really scaled or positioned just a quick render to see how the parts were looking, the initial idea for the lights was more transmitters to saturate the foreward area with IR though again they were rough modelled placeholders, the vents at the front were primarily for brake cooling i hadnt given it much thought other than that :) same with the ammo.
Are we looking at rear view of the vehicle?
its the front.
ok, still just playing with ideas, modelling, adding, removing etc, ill start adding detail when im happy with the overall layout, the original model had reasonably accurate brakes, steering and suspension but as they really arent seen in the image and the scene was starting to get sluggish ive removed it all and only left the wheels for now, the vehicle is also 4ws so it can almost turn on its own axis, which though u may not be able to see it :) is why the wheel arches are so deep.
and lots of other stuff! :D
thanks for the feedback sofar, its always really appreciated

I like the knobbly wheels - how did you do that?
quick'n'dirty demo :D
toroid primative, select paint faces tool and paint around the area i want lumpy :) mmm control to add to selection for those unsure
http://www.iwerx.com.au/files/st1-800x484.gif
http://www.iwerx.com.au/files/st2-800x483.gif
next select the tip tool
http://www.iwerx.com.au/files/st3-800x484.gif
which creates tips on all the selected faces
http://www.iwerx.com.au/files/st4-800x483.gif
then using expand on the object widget to push the points out further from centre
http://www.iwerx.com.au/files/st5-800x483.gif
finally sub surface to smooth it all out
http://www.iwerx.com.au/files/st6-800x483.gif
hope its useful to everyone |

Those are going to be some poly-heavy wheels! Cool technique, think you might want to make some low poly 'proxys' to use whilst working on the scene so you can just load up the high-detail versions when you need them....
Breech has, as usual, shown the immense attanetion to detail he's known for, especially when it comes to miltary stuff - I had another query; what's the main role of this vehicle? It's got those great tready tires, but very little ground clearance so it's not a serious off-roader I would assume? I'm thinking more of a light-weight reconaissance/scout type vehicle? Quick, and lightly armed.... Whatever, it's a great 'little' model - look forward to seeing further detail.
I really like your test renders too and would be interested to know what kind of lighting you're using - are these Vray renders or back in Lightworks - I seem to recall you have both now? |

What is not shown is the super lifts that lifts that bad boy way off the ground when needed letting those tready tires just dig into any terrain that it comes up against :). |

hiya Nez, thanks the low poly wheel placeholders is a great idea, the role of the vehicle originally was ROUAV remote operated urban assault vehicle, so i guess scouting, patrol, troop support etc. the ground clearance is a matter of perspective ive included another render with a horse for scale

lol only joking.
for the renders i use a very simple setup as shown + only 1 infinite light as bumps dont appear to show up under pure GI.

i like vray as it does a real nice job and renders really quickly |

Hah, you had me going there - it was only when I read the post the second time I saw you're 'only joking'...! Very funny...
Thanks for the info on the lighting - doesn't help me that much as I don't have VRay, but at least 'now I know'. Glad to see I was on roughly the right track for the vehicle - look forward to seeing it develop. |
