Got a few tweaks to do (particularly to the lighting) but I throw this out for feedback:

I like it. Very vibrant colors and I especially like the depth of field aspect. Well done. |

Great effect and nice picture. Piling up objects this way is always difficult for the risk of intersecting, but you did a great job. Did you use physics?

You're really getting into the swing of these multiple-copy 'doodles' - I really like how you take a deceptively simple object to make such an intricate and complex image - not to mention great materials and lighting of course... quite a departure from the clay-modelling style, but something you've obviously got a knack for!
Like Georg I'm curious as to whether you used Physics or similar for placement, or just patient manipulation....
Also intrigued - after 'links' and this one, do you aim (pardon the pun) to try some more images in a similar theme, making a little 'family' of related images? Like Rothko had his 'blue period' (or whathever), we could have WWotW's 'multiplicity phase' or suchlike... |

That's not too shabby, is that. |

Materials, lighting, depth of field, and the "chaos" all add up to make this apparently simple render a great image! And I say apparently simple as clever selection of those elements is not so simple and has taken care and work. I do like this new style you've developed, we called the last one "Kateclay" so what do we name this new one now it's two images old? :)

Multipli-Kate-ion?
Kate-iplicity?
Kate-iplication?
Not sure, but its very effective, whatever it gets called....
(NB - Tom - have you replied to every thread on the forum today?! Beginning to seem like it! ;)) |

I like this one too! As mentioned: Vibrant colors, object placement, depth-of-field... all well done!

Yes, replying to every thread :) Been out of office for several days, out of the country in fact, so catching up on all that has happened since then, which is a lot of good stuff.
Thanks!

It's the 'Barrel of Monkeys' phase...
...except that it's more fun. |

KateClay is simply on hold until suitable shaders are available WS side (and, hopefully, the ME is sorted out). Doug is patiently waiting in the wings. This new style is called 'Kate Was Bored'.
Been fiddling with the lighting. Here it is with a different hdri map. This is just a low quality one for testing so the samples are low and the dof is only roughly done. Any preference?

I think I prefer the second because it doesn't have one piece that is almost entirely highlight, which was potentially a bit overpowering; but I think I prefer the first as it is a bit darker and I liked the closer zoom in to the pieces which gave the scene more chaos and clutter. So some kind of odd hybrid crossbreed of the two might be my preference :)

oh, you've gone and broken it all now!
What did suggest the possible photographic imperfections of blown highlights and unexpected surface variations has been converted to a mere 3d representation of the truth.
/me throws a lump of wet clay at Kate!

Overall I find the composition of the second one better, but those four targets right in the foreground are off putting a bit, it does hurt your eyes a bit initially.
The second one does look better though |

What a mess, looks like my kid's room!:D
The second view is back slightly and the glare is gone on the right side. A play with depth of field I see. My thought would be to change the color of one of the red targets where you have two on top of one another. That would be the "target" (eye would zero in here) and work the depth of field off of that one. The glare in the first was uncomfortable to look at but did add a distorted texture to the target.
Have you asked Parva or another shader Guru to try and create a "Kate Clay" Shader for you? |
