Naes3d:

Although I understand what 'Rants and Raves' is all about, and that is fine, I find myself doing a heavy sigh at this first post in the new Forums section.

I believe that if you spent just 1/10 the energy in creating something in tS that you do in making all your other posts, you would be learning and getting very good at 3D. Thats what we're all here for anyway.

The last render of yours I recall seeing was the 'Doghouse' one on Dec 20th. How is it coming along? Have you done any more work on it? If you need help with it on certain things just ask the people here, they are more than willing to help anyone. If you've got 'artists' block, then ask for ideas.

The real purpose of this Forum is to learn, teach and share ideas and renders done in trueSpace so that we all get better at it. This Topic is for blowing off steam (and so it should be), but this is not the end all, be all of 3D, its a sideline, not the main show. So, show us what you're up to in 3D.

I won't bother going to find the link but the last post I made related to tS on my machine was that it wasn't working. It happened after I installed the latest (at the time) video drivers for my card. I figured that since I planned on reformatting my hard drive anyway, I would see how tS acted upon the reinstall. Unforntunately, tS5 is one of the apps that hasn't made it back on.

Instead of further tooling with work-arounds, I decided I would focus on making the decision to jump to tS7 or not. I am no longer satisfied with tS5. This isn't a statement about Caligari or it's direction, but tS5 is old news. It was an excellent tool in it's day, but it's day is gone.

In a way, you could almost say these are the words of Caligari.

The future of 3D is in tS7 (according to the hype) so decided I am not going to waste time trying to make a dying app compatible with my new system. I am not the kind of consumer who upgrades simply because a new version is out. I want to know that tS7 is the best app out there there in terms of performance and price, so I am in evaluation mode.

Of course, evaluation mode is not so productive without a copy of truePlay. How long it takes for me to come to a decision is eminently linked to Caligari's speed at submitting the material I need to evaluate it.

If it makes you feel better, my avatar image was something I modelled in tS but it wasn't rendered in it. Which brings me to my 'been there done that' moment. There was a time when someone made the assumption that I was not doing anything 3D because they hadn't seen what I was doing. So I posted an image of what I was doing and 3 posts I made were immediately deleted.

Suffice it to say, trueSpace does not exist in a vacuum. There are other apps that are competing for my (and others) money. This one happens to import my .cob files, though it doesn't qualify as a supporting app. I would very much like to upgrade to tS7, but I am not going to do so just because.

As far as the purpose of the forum, I would like to think developing a community is also a big part of it's existence. So with this post I took a moment to poke some fun at myself. Why have the first rant be somebody genuinely pissed off? I could have did something negative and made the posts title: It's been a week and no truePlay. Caligari is dropping the ball! but insead I opted for something that might make somebody laugh instead.

So much for that idea.

I made the decision that the next image I upload to this site will be made with tS7. I gave myself a 7 month evaluation period, but I intend to drop the money for tS7 as soon as I see that tS7 is everything that Caligari has claimed it to be. That could be tomorrow, you never know.

Perhaps when truePlay is available, you will be the first person to invite me to experience tS7 thru your eyes.

Now thats what I call follow through! Looks like you'll be king of the posts here. With the new forum setup you'll always be on top. :D

One question though, How do we make this a sticky?

I'm laughing already!

Now go render somethin'...even if you have to use tS5 to do it. 7 months should be enough time.

Now that'd be a real follow-thru.

Just a bbit of info, when I was last having problems with tS5, I was having serious display issues. When I was in Direct X display mode, all I would got was solid transparent no matter what and when I was in OGL all I got was a black screen. Pretty impossible working conditions. Really wish it did work predictably.

Sometimes I grab my tS5 disc and say 'I'm gonna install you!' but then I remember the utter frustration I felt when it crapped out on me. To make matters worse, I just went to find my tS file for the Gallery Showdown and it looks like I failed to back it up.

I am wondering if I would be better served if I just downloaded tS5 from the server instead of installing from my disc? My disc is old. What's on the server has to be the latest build of tS5.

Hmmm. A little spark of excitement. Maybe I should give CS a call...

As for being always on top aholio, all I can say is BWAHA HAHAHA!!

"I just went to find my tS file for the Gallery Showdown and it looks like I failed to back it up." Naes3d maybe you should check out b_scotty's Avatar.

He claims in was taken after he forgot to save a scene -"Isn't that how everyone looks when they forgot to save their scene?"

Okay, so, I lied.

I re-installed tS5 and it isn't giving a black screen anymore. It still crashes pretty frequently, but that was always the case. Nuthin' breaks momentum like a crash.

I almost had something to render, when tS decided to dive from the top of the cage like Mick Foley. Sigh. And I didn't save :(

I'll try again to satisfy those who just want me to render something.
