Enjoy!

Does tsNet require TS7 on each machine? License fees for additional copies of TS7? This is very interesting. One more question, does each computer have to have the same operating system in order to use? If one machine is using Linux?

Does tsNet require TS7 on each machine?

I would think so.

License fees for additional copies of TS7?

Unless anything's changed on either Caligari's or QC's end of things I would say no. I was told when I asked before [the release of tSNet 2.7 & tS7], that having a tSNet licence for X number of nodes entitled you to have that number of copies of tS installed, providing that the extra copies were being used purely for rendering via tSNet.

This is very interesting. One more question, does each computer have to have the same operating system in order to use? If one machine is using Linux?

If I had to guess, I'd say the official answer would be that they all have to be WindowsXP [as that's what tS7 requires]. However, if you're that much of a masochist that you like using Linux, I suppose you could always try & get tS7 to work on there [with WINE or whatever]. If you manage that, & if you also manage to get your linux box communicating with your windows boxes [samba?] then I'd say it's theoretically possible. Rather you than me though. :) Good luck.

Alien pretty much nailed your questions. tSNet itself doesn't require Windows XP, but since trueSpace 7 does, that doesn't help a whole lot unless you run the control program only on a separate machine that is not running Windows XP. Just to clarify things a bit, there is a plugin that has to be loaded in trueSpace for tSNet to work, and trueSpace has to be running on each machine for rendering to be possible. So, whatever constraints are imposed by trueSpace are therefore imposed on tSNet render nodes. Regarding the licensing, the price of tSNet does include the extra number of licenses necessary to perform rendering on as many nodes as have paid for (for the purpose of rendering, not interactive use, as mentioned by Alien).

Thanks for that confirmation. I have a question of my own, with regards to licencing.

Say you buy a licence for 3 nodes - does that mean 3 nodes plus the main machine, or 3 nodes including the main machine?

It is including the original trueSpace license. In other words, a 3-node license lets you install trueSpace on an additional two machines.

Ah, right, ok. Thanks. I kinda figured that would be the case, but wanted to make sure. I'm not currently a tSNet owner/user, as I only have the 1 machine running & don't do things in batches, but at some point in the future I look forward to using it.

Thanks for answers! :)

Well I just rebuilt a machine from spare parts from my last upgrade (XP2500: which overclocks to way over XP3200+ speeds) and I have Ubuntu on it, just don't have another license for XP ( at least yet). So I have three computers now which could be used for TS7 rendering that is once and if I get another XP install on third. All in all very resonable rates for this, more later.

http://www.newegg.com/ has pretty good prices on Windows XP at times (if you're not already aware of Newegg). Picked Home edition for $88 (OEM, and it is not an upgrade) for a relative a little while back, rather than forking out the close to $200 in a retail store. Pro can be had OEM for around $145, I think, instead of $300 at CompUSA (for instance). If you're already aware of the price advantage of Newegg, sorry. :) Still, it can be a not insignificant investment, of course. There may be cheaper prices around, but Newegg is at least a reputable dealer.

I got an OEM Windows XP SP1 for 79.00 at edirectsoftware.com, I think that is the url?

It's basically an old Dell OEM disk, but works on any machine. No manual, just a CD.

The caution here is that Microsoft doesn't support OEM disks as they conclude that the manufacturer of the machine will be there for support. So you won't get any tech support.

However, you can download, query and do anything else you want, you just don't have the pretty blue box and that extra thin manual. heh
