I'm not sure if many of you have heard of this new technology since it actually barely came out (at least to public). Basically it's one videocard with 2 GPU (graphic processing unit). It seems that technically it could double the power and use in 3d applications/Games if programmed for (the 2nd doesn't seem to be really used much). It could actually even go as far as quad core(SLI but that's way too much money to spend :() and pretty much no application most likely takes advantage of it or the 2nd GPU on one (at least very well). Specifically GeForce 7950 GX2 was pretty interesting to hear about as it might (probably not) be the next tech hit for video cards.

Note that at this time it is actually not really worth getting IMHO as it doesn't seem to offer signifacant performance (maybe 5-10 frames extra) in actuall applications/games (unless specifically programmed for at least from what I've heard). I don't own one and most of the ideas of its power were based on hardware sites that did comparisons in games and 3dMark between the other high-end cards.

Cheapest I see it for is 550-700USD.

Just a thought.

Dual GPU cards aren't really a new (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voodoo_5) idea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_fury_maxx#Alternate_Frame_Rendering). Even quad GPUs wouldn't be a new idea (http://www.x86-secret.com/articles/divers/v5-6000/v56kgb-6.htm).

As far as I can tell, the 7950 GX2 isn't even really a proper dual GPU card. It seems to be more like a pair of single GPU cards bolted together, with a few connections to join them so that they can connect to just 1 card slot. I admit that's over-simplifying it somewhat, but I just don't consider it to be a true dual GPU card.

Hmmm, a single 7950 is almost as fast as a pair of 7900's. The only reason it is slower is because they tuned down the 7950. The core clock speed is 200MHz slower than a 7900. Check out the http://www.gamespot.com/features/6152217/index.html?q=geforce%207950 (article).

There's more than 1 way to get 4 GPUs in a system... ;)
