Google served you well, it is indeed a Gateway machine.
You don't look a gift horse in the mouth, and all that. Next machine I think I'd like to build myself.
That's understandable. My 1st IBM-compatible PC was actually a Zenith 286 laptop, which cost me £20 [in 1997, IIRC] on account of it not having a battery [though it did come with a power brick], only having 640K RAM & a [IIRC] 10MB HD, as well as the backlight on the mono LCD being FUBAR [though it did have a port to connect an EGA (less colours & lower res than VGA) monitor, which I managed to scrounge for free]. It wasn't really good for anything beyond an old DOS version of MS Works, & a few old DOS games, but it was better than nothing.

After that, I found the case, motherboard, memory card [the memory actually went on a card that slotted into the main system board!], & CPU card [yep, went on a seperate card like the RAM] for an AST 486 in a skip [still had to buy the CPU, RAM, & everything else]. Since then I've built my systems completely from generic [as opposed to proprietry] hardware.

No way in hell I'm reinstalling, I'm feeling lucky to have escaped barely alive the first time.
LOL :D It gets easier with practice, as you pick up tips & tricks on how to make the whole thing [re-installation] go quicker & easier.

I downloaded the full Mozilla Suite as a fallback html editor in case Netscape 4 failed me. They don't seem all that different as far as editing capabilities go- I don't need anything fancy and neither one seems to be that.
TBH, I prefer Frontpage, but for a freebie, Netscape's not bad.

I prefer Firefox over the Mozilla browser so far- even though underneath they aren't all that different, and I've already got FF set up with quick links to my usual sites and a spiffy skin. Mozilla is definately got a old school retro look that I haven't bothered to figure out how to change yet. Not sure I'll even keep it.
Yeah, I prefer FF to Mozilla as well. I only use FF for a few sites, especially the Caligari forums - otherwise I tend to prefer Maxthon.

Thanks for the tip about moving the sound card to another slot, I might try that if all else fails.
In theory, with XP, it's not supposed to make any difference, however practice & theory don't always agree. ;)

I have to open up the case-again- since I have an extra NIC card that I'm going to have to extract; the notification icon in the system tray helpfully informing me it's unplugged is bothering my aethetics.

r/c [right-click] Start menu
click Customize
go to the Advanced tab
set Control Panel to display as menu, & do Ok & Apply as necessary.
on Start menu, under Control Panel -> Network Connections, you should see the card that's not currently in use listed [as well as any others]. r/c & disable the unused card - sorted.

Hmm, most motherboards use generic drivers (or can use the generic drivers until you can find some better ones).
That's pretty much what I was trying to say earlier, but often the generic drivers are pretty basic.
