Hi Gang:

The 'Mr. Experience' scene all stems from a 36" x 24" four color black light poster I have of Jimi Hendrix. In normal light it looks colorful, but kinda flat looking. Turn down the house lights and add a Black Light to it, and it pops to life. All the colors glow and jump out at you, and the blue of the paper fades Jimi's face into a deep recess. It's really quite striking when you see it.

So, what I wanted to do was somehow re-create that 3 Dimensional look in a rendering. Not necessarily a Black Light look, but something that would say "Hey, this has depth to it". Being fairly new to trueSpace and not knowing any better, I went about trying to do it. Most of the people who have commented on it in the past are not even aware that this is a 3D rendering at all. I agree that it's not your ordinary 3D rendering, what with a straight on Top View POV and no perspective, but I do think it is striking and expands the realm of what 3D is capable of.

The original scene was created back in 1998, entirely in trueSpace3, no imported .eps or .ai lines at all. It's all done with flat planes and polyline extruded objects. I just recently brought this scene into tS6.0 to give it layered wire colors, but everything here can still apply to older versions of the software. A scanned version of the poster was brought into the top view as a background pic for reference. Each color was then outlined with polylines and then point edited into exact place. There are over 300 separate objects in this scene. Each polyline plane was then extruded to 0.10 in depth. In the original version there were basically 4 colors, black, yellow, magenta, and pink. The blue is a plane sitting barely above a pink background plane. Everything was stacked up on top of the one below it. Think of it as a contour or terrain map. There are nine different elevation layers in the scene. So, where you see a black outline around everything, there is actually a larger 'black' object underneath the smaller color above it. So, the progression is blue, pink, black, yellow, black, then pink in some areas.

As I said, these are extruded polylines, no bevels, but the 'trick' is in the lighting and the smoothing of the objects. Each pillow-like object has a depth to it because each one has 'smoothing' turned on in the material editor instead of the normal 'faceted' or 'auto facet'. That is what allows tS to make that 'pillow' look with no geometry added to the inside of the objects. This is before the days of SDS modeling.

The specular highlights and gloss add to the effect. Some of the gaudier effects were done with the Chrome shader. There are only 3 point lights in this scene. One white one roughly left of the middle, one light blue one off the top right edge and one reddish one off the upper left side. All are set fairly low to give off some nice highlights and some shading effect. The lights do not cast shadows.

Rendered from the Top View, Ray Tracing on, 4 time AA turned on because of all the lines and set the background color to match the blue color. 36,000 points, 17,500 polygons. There you have it, a psychedelic blast from the past.

Enjoy

Great picture! An interesting approach. I have found tS to be great for making 2d images (specially for making textures for 3d objects). This carries it to another level - well done.
