This may just be me but I've tried this on two different computers with different video cards and found the same result.

Both nVidia. 9600GT and 6200.

In the Workspace:

1. Create a new space/scene.

2. Enable 'Show Backfaces'

3. Select the camera.

4. Set camera (so you are viewing with it.)

5. Try to add a cube to the scene.

My screen goes either all white or gray. Disable 'Show Backfaces' and the view returns to normal.

Show backfaces again (the anomaly returns) and use the rectangle zoom to zoom out. You can see what was obscuring the screen.

Is this the backface part of the camera object?

Yep I can confirm your findings as well. On my rig, see Signature. Not suggesting a workaround but if you Enable "Enable Obj Mode" inside the standalone camera's Render Attributes it seems to help.

Thanks. That seems to work for me as well.
