Ok, I was thinking long and hard before I decided to join this months MMC.

However, after thinking I come to the conclusion that this might be a good kind of pressure to actually finish the model...

I also hope that this might get Caligari to talk with their colleges on MS gaming division and perhaps make it possibly to export models from Truespace to MS Train simulator 2, due to be released this Xmas? ;)

The model i Swedish state railways diesel-electric engine T43.

The fifty units built in 1961-63 has a 1065 kW diesel engine from GE and was built by Nohab. They weigh 72 metric ton and has a max speed of 90 km/h. Primary service was heavy shifting and duties on secondary lines (all major railway lines in Sweden is electrified). They were also used with some passenger trains so they ARE a method of transport... ;)

Most T43 are now scrapped but some remains with private rail companies. One was actually sold to an American veteran railway...

T43's younger and stronger brother T44 (which looks almost identical) is still in active service and will remain for foreseeable future and are now being re engined.

I am modeling this T43 in TS 6.6. My plan is to migrate it to TS 7.6 later for texturing and access to the Vray engine. However, I prefer to model in modelside and why use TS 7.6 then when it only is slower than TS 6.6?

3/5 people doing trains! Re-working my strategy I think is in order...

Nice one - looks like you have lots of details to work with!

I'm finding 7.6 much more workable as a modeller than 7.5 but there definitely are some functions like edge chamfer that I still do on the modelside.

Well, the details ain't so many yet. You could almost detail yourself to death on this thing I think. I am going to keep it on a sane level...

I also have had a hard time getting to know how the boogie sides looks, I have to get some decent photos of them to make a guess - the drawing I have isn't very detailed and its a bit low-res. Luckily I know how to get these photos - the benefits from modeling a old type is that they are more accessible on museums than modern locomotives are since they are still in service.

Working with detail on the couple and buffers.

Can't go further with the boggie before I have some good picture of one.

I know what you mean about over detailing - a million polys isn't always the best solution. Looking good though. Are you going to go for a brand new look or well used when it comes to testuring?

Thank you for your kind words. I am quite happy myself actually.

I am thinking about going for the brand new look with the color scheme they were delivered in - a nice blue, white and red.
I don't have experience enough to get a dirty look with Vray yet I think - when I used Lightwork I used multilayer to add things like dirt but how do you do that with Vray where you only have one layer?
So I think I will stay with brand new...

Work on this MMC has progressed slowly this week. I am afraid that I won't make it in time - my hope is that the weekend has really poor weather so that I can sit in front of the computer without anyone complaining... ;)

I have added some ventilation for the engine and other components and added all guard rail and ladders.

I still have problems with the details of the bogie's. The main problem is the brakes and how they are attached to the rest of the bogie - this is proving to be hard to model for me. The attached image shows how a bogie looks like.

Due to lack of time, I think I will leave the detail as it is now, with some minor adjustments perhaps.

I have added wheels and other essentials and added some more detail to the upper body of the loco. I am unsure if I am going to add electric contacts for wagon connection and handles to open doors to engine and other details - maybe if time allows.

Next on my list to do is to add rail and to move it all over to TS 7.6 to use the Vray renderer. This also marks beginning of the texture and lightning part, the thing I know least of...

Since I am a total beginner of the Vray texturing process, I assume this is going to take most of the remaining time, so I guess I will have to cut some detailing. :(

Looking very cool - you've got a lot of detail already and some good texture work will probably help 'hide' other areas where you've had to leave some out.

This has a lot of potential for a very cool render so looking forward to seeing what you come up. Lots of scope for an interesting setting too....

Wow, this has come a long way since I last checked. And coming on mighty fine it is too. Great detailing - keep up the good work.

Working with texturing and not getting very far...

I have trouble to position the textures as I like. I can't understand how I will find the right faces in the 60k faces that the model has.... so progress is slow.

Another problem is that the workspace don't work if I have any resource on the network, this slow it down extremely despite the fact that the network and server is responsive...

I desperately need a texture course... :o

no...that's alright. But wait on that note...I may be able to help you with that...

The only thing I would say is the scoop looks out of place...black or brown maybe?

Its looking real nice. You might try www.google.com and click on the image tab and then do a search on this trains name, it often can pull up even more than 1 photo for you. Its my favorite for getting photos to model, if I can not take my own photo.

What is a "scoop" and why does it look out of place? :)

Are you talking about the color generally? This is the real color that these diesels had most of their working life - take or give some variations. I have had some trouble to get the correct colors - different photos have different RGB values as we all know...
Ah, and let me point out that the cabin is wrong color - it should be the blueish on all parts above the white line.

And the rails of course... any good suggestions for a texture that is brown metal on sides and shiny on top?

Not a scoop? No...it's not called a scoop...okay.

What I meant

The wacking great purple thing on the front. that fron wheel guard type thing...and why it looks out of place...it's purple...

As for the rails...I think this may help unless you're not going with a train track rail...Have a look at this and see it if helps you any.

What I did was do a planear UV projection. Rotation set as:
X:-90 Y:90 Z:0

Feel free to use the rail if you want

HTH!

Ok.

This is my end result due to lack of time - I have work tomorrow and the time is 0100 CET, so my sleep is going to be to little.

Hence, I have to give up...

My final image, that I have to enter with, lacks some texturing and has wrong lighting. I can't understand why I couldn't get shadows and GI with Vray, perhaps I made a mistake to use Vray when I am so unused to it - I should have sticked to Lightworks...

So, this is the embarrassing image I leave to this MMC:

15935

I plan to improve this more during less stressfull times.

Things to do:

*) Fix texturing

*) Fix hierarchy to perhaps speed things up

*) Understand Vray

*) Fix lightning

*) Add missing details in modeling?

*) Add wagons and environment?
