I just downed and installed the free TS7.6, and when I go to run it, it displays a pretty logo of a butterfly and nothing else. it doesn't hang up or lock up my system, it doesn't crash, ut doesn't show up in the applications list, it just shows the logo and does absolutely nothing until I go to the "Processes" list and shut it down. it shows up as a process but not as am application.

I've removed it, reinstalled it, etc.

I have a dual core athlon 64 and an nvidia video card with current drivers.

This is usually an issue with the nVidia drivers. "Current" drivers is not necessarily a good thing if they don't work.

You can get nVidia beta drivers here:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=88

Are you using Vista (64 bit?) or XP?

I have Vista x64 and a 7900GS card. I'm currently using the unreleased 177.66 drivers (available from the link above) which are working well currently and resolved some long standing issues.

Others have had success with the 175.19 drivers available from the nVidia website:

I'm using XP and have no intent to go to vistugh. I'll try other drivers...

BTW, are there any older versions od TS that work and are worth getting if they're freeware? If so what ones?

Which video card are you using? I've found that some of the older (really old) drivers are better in XP for the 6 and 7 series nVidia cards. On my laptop with a 6600, if I recall correctly, I'm using the 85.14 drivers.

Unfortunately because of the way that so much of what is done in TrueSpace 7.6 is done on the video card GPU, it tends to be very driver sensitive. It probably doesn't help that it's running two separate versions of DX at the same time, either. DX6 for Model side and DX9 for Workspace side. That particular problem should resolve itself in the next version if Model side is finally removed.

With the release of 7.6, older version are no longer available from Caligari or supported. You could probably buy them off other users though if they no longer want them though.

Well, I would like to at least try out truespace, but I'm not gonna knock myself out trying to get it to run. I'll try newer video drivers but if they don't fix it, that's it.

I have a nvidia geforce 8400 gs card, BTW.

I have a NVIDIA Quadro FX 2000, and have not had any problems with it. But then I don't think you can get them anymore... they ARE in the 8000's now.

If the latest driver doesn't work, try a version or two before your current version.

Thanks, but I'm not downgrading my system just for one program....

This "does nothing on startup" is something I've seen when tS7.6 is installed to the Programs directory - then it needs to be run as Administrator, or it just sits there at the splash screen. So I'd try setting the shortcut to run it as admin and see if that helps.

HTH!

Ya, running as administrator works with several programs I've installed.

One will get to the splash screen or it will start to load and stop.

Once I run as administrator, the program runs normally.

Hmm, I've never ran as administrator before, could you give me a quick tip on how to do that? Also does it work in XP as I won't use vistugh?

Nevr mind, I found out how to run it under admin and it still hung up.

I'm going to try new nvidfia drivers, but if that doesn't do it I'm going to quit wasting my time.

You know, this might be the best modeller/rendered ever, but if it is so delicate and finicky about what it runs on it's not much of a program.

ProTools had this same problem (Hang at start up, but still appears in processes) for some users.

There is a file update you need to run...

I will try to find it for you.

well, it looks like I can't get TS to run, and that tons of other people are having serious problems with it, so I guess it's not worth it even as a free program.

Damn, I'd have liked to try it but it's not worth beating my head agianst a wall, resetting my whole system, etc.

Oh, and "Update your drivers" is really just the "recorded message" reply to problems, regardless of the situation...

I hear they're giving away hexagon 1.2 for free, maybe it works. From my personal experience, truespace doesn't for a lot of people.

Sorry about your luck, but it really is a driver/nVidia problem. :(

Same things happening to me, splash screen shows up, then after a couple of seconds I get a message saying that there's a problem and needs to close, the window with the "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send" buttons.

It's really frustrating because, like the OP, I'm not prepared to change/downgrade my drivers. If it truly is a modeling software, it really shouldn't be this fragile.

I'm a fan of free things, and was hoping trueSpace would be some fresh air after using Blender for sometime. News of this free software is everywhere, even on XNA front page, but with problems this early (splash screen? come on!) and happening to so many people, it's a bad first impression on trueSpace and on the "free" community in general.

Hopefully it will be fixed, I'm still interested in trying it, especially with the huge video course collection.

Cut me a break. You get $600 software for free and your complaining because you might not be up to spec. or the drivers aren't correct? I can't think of many people who BOUGHT the program and couldn't get it to work when they tried. There are lots of happy people here who did get it to work. The complainers gave as much effort to this as their other free software. Zero.

One other person complained here. So where did "Lots" come from?

Caligari wants you to get this to work. What have you done so far?

being fairly new tech truespace runs using alot of GPU so some graphics cards have trouble. my old ATI radeon 9800 pro works well, you won't find many ATI user with these issues either. seems the nVidia cards are not as lucky.

Yep I have an older ATI Radeon 9600 Pro with only 128 MB and no problems.
I think the nVidia crowd just needs to find the right drivers as Jack stated many times.

So far problems are few and far between. An unbelievable number of people are downloading, and yet we get few reports of it not running, so the software is far from fragile. All the same, those few who are having problems, we'd like to get them fixed up too!

If you can't get tS to run at all, be sure to include your system specs when you post - CPU, system RAM, OS, graphics card (model, and RAM). First thing to try is to set the application to run as administrator. You may also want to reinstall and run the install as administrator too.

Graphics drivers are best updated (or set to working versions if there are known problems with current releases - no specific known problems with up-to-date releases at this time), but not sure if they would stop the application from running.

Many issues might interfere, including OS, security, hardware conflicts, etc. Can be tricky to figure out, but we'll do what we can to help!

Thanks!

Tom

I dont think its always down to Graphic card drivers although they are usualy neglected,as you can see from my systems spec below being a laptop my graphic card is'nt great but runs TS76 ok.

Have you tried holding Ctrl and double clicking on the TS76 icon ? This should bring up a small window try selecting "use default configuration"

Vista Home Premium 32bit

Amd Turion 64 2GHZ

Geforce Go 6100 384mb

2 GB DDR2 ram

As a programmer, I have this itch to find out and fix problems. I too have an ATI graphics card. I tried to run as administrator, same problem. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it outside of the c:/program files, same problem. I tried the double click --> use default configuration, same problem.

Then I tried something just for the heck of it. I right-clicked the icon and went to properties. Under the Compatibility tab, I checked "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and chose "Windows 95". Amazingly it worked. Somehow:confused:.

Might want to change double clicking to single click JimB. That might make matters worse as you can have several instances of tS7.6 running at the same time.

No holding Ctrl and double clicking on the desktop icon (shortcut) is how it works for me,but if the shortcut is in the Quick launch bar then it would be a single click. :)

That's very strange Akongo (since the program isnt compatible with Win95!). Do other compatibility modes help it run? Was this Vista you are running on again?

Thanks!

I have Windows XP. Along with 95, it also worked with 98/NT. I also must add that it is pretty slow, just rotating/panning the view on an empty space. What's even more interesting is that running under Win95 compatibility is smoother than under Win98.

Running under NT, 2000, and using my default XP will cause it to not pass the splash screen at all.

As an FYI, I was having this issue with truespace 5.0 as well. Splash screen would show at launch, disappear, then nothing, not even in the process list.

Same thing happened with 7.6.

5.0 had been working on the machine until I upgraded the cpu and memory. I went to a 2.6GHz dual core opteron 64 and 4 gigs of ram (windows XP service pack 2, so I only get to see 3gigs of it). Video card didn't change, it is an ATI Radeon X1600 with 512mb of ram.

Early on in this thread someone mentions editing properties of the launch icon and turning on windows 95 compatibility mode. That fixed the issue for both 5.0 and 7.6.

Interesting GnoWhey, that seems to point toward the hypothesis that in some cases it's a motherboard driver issue. Thanks for posting, hopefully that'll prove helpful to the users still having problems.
