I'm currently working on a detailed covered wagon.
I am not good at posting along with my work, if I get rolling I tend to just keep going but I figured I'd post here in case someone sees something that looks out of place they could give me a heads up to it (though sometimes I tend to stick with something if I think it looks better than the real thing :D).
While I am basing it on real covered wagons it is going to kind of be a mutt. I didn't want to do a Conestoga wagon (which were rather large and I don't think available to the average poor farmer). So I am kind of taking different aspects of covered wagons and pulling them together to more of a wagon you would find the average farmer using the go west (many used their farm wagons converted over).
I found quite a number of sites with photos and one with some measurements so I use them as much as possible. So far haven't found a site that gives all the measurements (but then I probably would digress from them anyways).
So here is what I have so far (by the way I am also trying to make this my first really "clean" model that will convert over well to other formats).

As you can see so far I have got the box and the seat springs done.
Each board has it's meeting edges beveled so as to make the individual boards show up. All the cures were extruded and then I placed edges across the sides to box it in so the triangulation would be clean.

I am not worried right now about texturing. I have their basic textures but once it is done I make the textures better. |

I like it. I'm a big fan of 'Olde Stuffe' like this.
One suggestion: beat up the edges of your top board- add some geometry in there and get some warping, dings and dents.
I'm glad you're including the nuts and bolts, it's details like that that help 'sell' the realism. |

Very nice. I don't really have anything constructive because I am still learning but I like the detail and I also like the 'Olde stuffe'. |

Thanks for all the encouraging replies :)
Here I have been just fitting out the wagon box. I started the straps as being wood but then thinned them down and made them iron.
Added some support pieces to the seat boards and bolted them down.
(the things floating are a set of bolts. I copy them from there any time I need a set :D)

Again, thanks for the comments,

Great work Mike. Its looks like your approaching this subject more like a carpenter than a modeller. |

Here are three results from a search for 'wagon' on the always amazing Shorpy (http://www.shorpy.com/).
One (http://www.shorpy.com/node/896?size=_original)
Two (http://www.shorpy.com/interstate-commerce-express-wagon)
Three (http://www.shorpy.com/node/1980?size=_original)
For the rest of the results, run your own search in the 'Search Shorpy' box.

I like this one.
If you are going for the old look...
Consider adding some rust streaks beneath the bolts, where rain has carried rust down the wood over time.
Also, the hard edge on the boards... maybe ease that a bit, as those hand-hewn planks (I like the texturing on them, btw!) would be rough whereas now they look precisely milled.
You might even consider adding a slight twist to a board or two, with a hole where a knot used to be.
Very nice job so far! |

Thanks, comments coming from all these great modelers means a lot to me.
I forget about shorpy (you get to looking and it is great). Great wagons (and still lifes).
Everyone wants the boards nicked and warped :D lol
So this brings me to a question. Most of the models I do I try to sell on different sites. So when I make the models I don't know if I should nick the boards up or not since that may make them less usefull to different artists or let the artists do the nicking and such?
I plan to make a scene later with this wagon (a wagon train crossing a river sometime near sunset or sunrise). Maybe submit it to the TS gallery? I don't know.
Again thanks for all the comments,

Small update.
I haven't had a lot of time to work on it.
I added the metal bracing and hinges to the back (also set the axes so it would open).
I don't know though. The bevel on the boards seems so large when you get close (but I guess you would never render that close). Also I am not sure but I was thinking.... The bolt... I think they would probably place the all the nuts on the outside since their stuff would be packed inside and they wouldn't want stuff snagging on it.
Well anyway, were are the renders (like I said not much change)
By the way the lighting isn't set right so that is why there are double shadows (makes it look like the bolts are floating).

Great work Mike. Love the extreme close up shot as it realy clarifies the points you raised. As for the facing of the bolts, I suppose it depends on the skill/craftsmanship of the person making it. Another way of a adding a bit of character to your design is perhaps one of the wooden planks could be brand new, indicating a recent repair job. Anyhow's great work and always a pleasure to see any updates on this. |

Well, it's been a while.
I haven't really done anything more because I've been very busy and when I actually have time I just don't have the drive to get on the computer.
I hope to have time coming up. I also have considered restarting it. I'm not sure yet. But I will try to start reposting as soon as I get time.

Trying to get back into it.
I decided to take a small break and work on a barrel (to go on the wagon).
Basically I used a silhouette from a barrel picture to extrude a cylinder to the correct shape. But then of course I wanted it to be like a real barrel with individual boards so I cut it all down to just two columns of faces (this gave me one board, or at least one side of one board). I then extruded it and then cleaned it up by putting in edges. I then beveled one of it's sides and copied and rotated till I had a full barrel.
Then created the hoops using cylinders and cliped a face (should have just extruded it) and extruded to make the hoop's tongue. Added two spheres (cut down) for the rivets.
Then another cylinder for the top that I cut into boards and clipped off a corner.
Add bung hole as needed. |

Nice to see an update on this, Mike. Lovely detail as per usual. And, the thing I like about all your WIP images is that they always have nice textures. Keep up the good work. |

I made up a bracket that the cover's hoops hook into (everyone is going "is he going to post EVERY time he adds a polygon" :D).
Ok... but how do they look to you? I think they are ok but not great (but then how much can you do to a bracket?).
I got the basic shape from a few photos I found.

Finished (I think) the seat. (ignore the foot board, I only have it there to check the measurement between the seat and where the feet of an average person should reach).
As you may notice I have changed the texture to something smoother (my eyes needed a rest... besides I will do a final texture when it is done).
