There's a serious incompatability issue between truePlay1.21 and trueSpace 7.5 and 7.51 in that scenes created within these two newest versions of trueSpace can no longer be opened within truePlay at all.

Apparently I placed this report previously in the wrong Forum Section here but all the related details are at this link:

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3389

Thank you in advance for responding to this important issue,

You can open your scenes in TruePlay? :o If you can tell me how to do it, I'll try it to see if it's a bug or if it's a user error!:D

Hi trueSpaced,

Actually that's the problem.... we're all supposed to be able to open our TS7.5 and TS7.51 scenes in truePlay1.21 just like those who have TS7.1 can. The problem is that we cannnot until this problem is addressed.

In the meantime we can't send models to clients or prospective sales customers for First Person Navigation usage with truePlay on their end because the files are incompatable.

This is a major problem for some of us and that number will be growing.

You mean like the Collabrative Player (I think that's what it's called) thing?

Hi TrueSpaced,

Check out the news in the following thread which will help you get started:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3389

Yeah, the player is called "truePlay1.21," but although it will allow you to enter what's called "Collaborative Space" or "Shared Space" or also "truePlaces" you won't actually be able to edit anything, which is what "Shared Space" is designed for when specifically using TS7.xx.

There's two very different kinds of Caligari places for people to visit, "Shared Space" and "truePlaces." Both can be accessed in two different ways, one is within the Caligari "truePlay1.21" software (does not require trueSpace at all) and the other is through "trueSpace7.xx."

"truePlaces" are open to the public, anyone can use them. "Shared Space" on the other hand is created for Caligari Customers to meet in and actually conduct live interactive modeling among other things with other folks.

If you're confused about any of it, rest assured you're definitely not alone on that... I've been reading up on it here for months and I'm STILL confused about it, so welcome to my world.

Your best bet in finding out more about this is in asking questions in the OTHER thread above though, since this is the wrong forum area for that and the other thread is in the right area. It also mentions the confusion already so feel free to jump right in there! :D

All the best,

I have TruePlay 1.21, so I know what it is, but all I can do is go around and look at the galleries, go into those rooms that have little games in them, and if someone else is there I can talk to them via its own instant messenger. I personally don't see what the real point of it is (from what I know how to do in it)... Thanks for the link, too, the only reason I don't go to the Thursday night meetings is because they're a bit too late for me (I'm in the EST time zone, so the meeting here is around 10:00, I think)... Hopefully the new TruePlay will come soon!

Hi trueSpaced,

Sorry, I wasn't sure from your prior posts that you were already familiar with truePlay or truePlaces. That said, since you are familiar with both already this will be a lot easier for me to explain.... "the point."

"The Point" in using truePlay currently (and this is about to significantly change soon) is having truePlay serve as a "window" if you will into a place where you can meet others from around the world for simultaneous conversation and occasionally for Caligari sponsored public events.

When I say "this is about to significantly change soon," I'm referring to the fact that there is a great deal more potential in the types and scope of activities one can experience within these immersive environments ("truePlaces") than is currently being utilized there.

(1) Avatars: Caligari has stated in several places here (such as the Captain's Blog) that the Avatars used by people within these environments is about to undergo a change which will bring them to a point where they are as realistic as the environments themselves.

(2) Activities: The server-side hosting software utilized behind the scenes in "truePlaces" is Caligari's "trueServe" hosting software platform. That software (again according to the Captain's Blog thread in the Roundtable Forum here) is going to be (or is currently being) upgraded from it's existing trueSpace 7.0 compatability to a new trueSpace7.5x standard. This will be a significant step on many levels. One of those "levels" will be that it will then be possible for Caligari to introduce trueSpace 7.5x scripted activities into these environments... scripted activities can be anything from music to video to vehicles (land air and sea) to sports... the list is endless. This is not to say that any related announcements pertaining to new Activities has been announced by Caligari of course since the upgrade of the server software must precede such script development. The potential will be there though. and given that each of us with TS7.5x can independently develop related scripts, you can be absolutely certain that scripts WILL be developed to make "truePlaces" come alive in truly fantastic new ways for all of us.

(3) Scope: Scope will of course depend upon the diversity of future scripts there. Once they are implemented over the next few months all manner of Activities will be possible, although it will of course be up to Caligari as to how far they intend to develop "truePlaces" for various Activities.

For instance... here's just a few possibilities to give you a glimpse of the potential Scope of Activities they could offer you as related scripts are created (by all of us) and developed:

Virtual Guides: Interactive virtual speaking Avatar Guides who can walk with you pointing out various points of interest and/or introducing various new features to you or helping you with existing features. This would of course be a highly complex sripting effort and wouldn't happen soon, but is possible now.

Interactive Galleries: Instead of merely looking at gallery images you could have a script attached to an image so that when you click on it a voice is summoned to tell you all about that particular image, perhaps even the voice of the image Author. Periodic announcements could similarly be broadcast throughout a given truePlace working from a simple timer loop, telling visitors about future or current events and features.

Transportation: Want to ride in a car... fly in a plane... ride on a rollercoaster... take a monorail tour with others... go for a minisub adventure? All these things will be possible if the scripts are developed.

Sports: Want to meet some friends online in truePlaces to play multi-player games? That too will be possible if scripts are developed for it.

Genuine Interactivity: Want to be able to completely transform the appearance of a room you're in with a friend by simply clicking on various items in that room? Again, not a problem with the right scripts.

Much more: The possibilities are endless so none of us has imagined them all yet. As time goes by and more of us become involved in the incredible power of trueSpace7.51's Link Editor, Macro recorders, and Scripting modules, all of us will be seeing huge changes for the better in what we can develop together... not just in "truePlaces" either, but that's where it will all begin.

Bear in mind that you can develop interactive immersive environments now with trueSpace 7.xx for use on your own hard drive or CD, and use that environment within trueSpace 7.xx in First Person Navigation mode or with "truePlay" give others the opportunity to explore it. Taking all that a giant step forward, you can also invest now in "trueServe" server software and related Hardware to provide your own MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) environments created and scripted within trueSpace 7.xx. Food for thought?

The sky's the limit on what we can all do with this.... Caligari has already given us the power, the rest is up to us now.;)
