This happened to me a lot last week and I haven't tried it since 7.51 was released BUT I was trying to attach a skeleton to a SDS object that still had its history (final mesh had not been extracted). Once it was just a normal mesh it worked but that was not helpful...:(

For SDS, I believe it works with the following approach:

Model base mesh

Attach skeleton

Apply SDS

I think applying SDS before attaching the skeleton causes problems. Tomas will correct me if I am wrong here though :)

Note that Weight Painting is done on the base mesh in this case, and not on the final SDS surface. Extracting to final using Flatten History will let you Weight Paint onto the final surface, but it wont be SDS any more of course.

Also note you can make your animation (record it) using the low poly mesh, then apply SDS and have the animation play back. This is nice for working with simpler scenes while animating, but raising the detail for the final render. This is based on my current tests with the Lucinda mesh from aXYZ models, not had any problem there applying SDS after the skeleton was in place.

Not sure if this is the cause of the original crash mentioned though, but Tomas is on the case there :)

HTH!
