I was playing around with the SSS shader for Vray 1.5 under tS7.5, and noticed that seemingly at random the object will revert back to standard shading (white with what appears to be regular diffuse reflectance) when I render. I can even use the color picker and see it's still painted with SSS, but it still renders wrong. I can't really reproduce it, but attached is a little scene it happens on. It seems to happen if I re-paint the object, but that's not always the case. If I close and open tS again, the object renders with SSS again.

Edit: Upon further inspection, no matter what material I try to paint the object with, it still renders with white/diffuse reflectance. So it may not be only SSS.

I just tried it from both the modeller side and the workspace. It rendered with SSS for me and I can't reproduce the problem.

The next time it doesn't want to render the SSS, save the file and try rendering it again.

I tend to think that this may be a memory issue since reopening TS solves the problem.

You didn't change render engines at all did you? If you switch to LW then it removes all reference to Vray i.e SSS, fresne or whatever and defaults to basic texture. When you switch back to Vray it doesn't automatically put the Vray settings back.

I guess turning bridge off would have the same effect....just a few ideas.

Thanks for the replies. No, no changing of renderers, or fiddling with the bridge. I can reproduce the problem by:

1. open the scene

2. use the color picker to load the material of the object into the material editor

3. changing the color

4. re-painting the object with the new material

5. render, and I get a gray object with no SSS

And it even happens if I don't change anything and just re-paint with the same material. Or if I use a different material entirely (Vray material or not)

Oddly enough, it only seems to happen on the object I made (or an object made similarly). So...

1. Create a cube (or cylinder)

2. Use "Polygon Bevel" to inset the top face

3. Apply and undo "add subdivision layer" (this creates edges from the corners of the inset face to the outer corners).

4. Extrude the inset face down into the object

5. Repaint the object
