I selected tankgirl and her horse,
then insert as object into the library,
then drag and drop back into the scene.
then ERROR message appeared. |

I get same result.
Of course if you're looking to glue them then the Encapsulate in 3D icon is what you're looking for... ;)
Then they save and load from the library just fine.

Ok, that would be a workarouind. But it should not be possible to
do something which results in a bug. |

Because the first thing I think of when someone says "encapsulate" is "Glue!"
Oh, wait, sarcasm is bad, sorry.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard anyone actually say 'encapsulate".
"Hey Fred, watch me as I encapsulate my hard hat to this iron beam with some SuperEncapsulator!"
"Jimmy, use the Elmer's Encapsulation Fluid to attach that paper heart to your valentine."
"You and me pal, we stick together like ...something that's been encapsulated!"
You guys slay me, where do you come up with this stuff? |

The devs probably used that because in the LE it encapsulated the existing objects into a new object, making the previous objects into sub objects with one level of abstraction.
Open the LE, drag select two objects, and click "encapsulate in 3D", type in the new name for the object, hit enter, and you'll see what I mean.
Spacekdet is right though the Encapsulate is not a workaround, it is the new glue/heirarchy tool. You could think of it as a groupinator if you wanted... ;)

.....and becuase if glue was mentioned, you can bet somebody would head over to the Model side and use the tools with the existing name there instead of the one that was intended. |

It also does more than glue does - glue was all about sticking objects together, so a natural and sensible name. You were sticking the geometry together so that made sense.
Encapsulate can be used like glue, but it is in fact doing something more than just sticking geometry together. You can use encapsulate on things that have no geometry in fact (scripts, shaders, you name it) where the glue concept wouldn't really make much sense, but the "add all these objects together into one new set / one new group" does make sense.
So the name does have a reason :) If you just happen to stop at using the "glue - like" part then that's ok, but calling it glue would really be a bad name for it as it does more, and does things differently :)
HTH!
Tom
PS - but that is one of the funniest posts I have read in a long time :) |

TomG, thanks for clearing that up even if it is a mouthful!
Spacekdet, sorry to hear about your Horse being turned into encapsulated dog food... |
