I tried using a displacment map on a nurbs sphere in TS7.11 using the VO shader... the usualy "fatal err in render, save your work" msg poped up followed by a crash in TS... now any time I try to render, open up the Material render, or change the render engine from VL to LW, TS crashes... I'm going to have to reinstall it for nothing I do seems to remedy this issue

Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so... was there any way other then a reinstall you did to correct it?

Don't re-install - it's almost never necessary unless you're one of the people who likes to customise tS7 by tinkering around with the application files.

First, start tS7 by clicking the icon while holding the <CTRL> key. Check the "Use Default Configuration" box and click OK. This starts tS7 without loading any projects or custom configs. It's described in Appendix B7 of the Artist's Guide.

If that doesn't work, locate the default.ctx file in your tS7 installation folder. Rename it and then restart tS7.
