I hope this is not really a bug but some user problem - if it is its really sad reflection....:(

I make a sphere either from sphere primitive or by sub-dividing a cube.

I make a thin cylinder 0.1 by 0.1 by 2.

Open geometry paint tool and paint onto normals of sphere. After about 6 'paints' i.e 6 objects trueSpace refuses to paint any more and locks up. I have a copy at work and at home with very different usage histories and have the same problem.

Checked it out with tS6.6 and there is no problem at least up to 100 objects (as many as I have tried), so this is something that has come in with tS7 or at least my version of it

It looks like one of the really useful tools in tS has been crippled.

I do really hope this is some quirk of tS that there is a workaround for..please...

Works just fine here including using paint rate and paint distance - unless there are some vital steps missing from your description?

You should try disabling the Bridge when you do Geometry Paint, but having said that I've tried it with the Bridge set to On, Off and at Auto with success. With the Bridge enabled tS does slow down the more geometry you paint, of course, but it still works for me.

I've never used Geometry paint before so after reading this I tried this test.
1) Created a polysphere latitude 22 longitude 32
2) Select "Geometry Paint"
3) Click once on Sphere
settings: Paint on Automatic, Orientation-Target Normal, X -Paint Distance 0, Scale - Source
4) right clicked mouse and moved copy of sphere to right.
5) Selected "Geometry Paint" again and selected original Sphere.
6) Locked up either after one or two clicks on original Sphere.
Windows Task Manager shows no CPU usuage.
TS7 not responding
Repeated test twice with same results.

Repeated below scenario here with tS7.11. No problems.

Please confirm the most obvious troubleshooting step I pointed out originally since you fail utterly to mention in below post - what is status of Bridge? For geometry paint Bridge should be disabled (even though it works when set to 'on' or auto for me).

Your mileage may vary due to architecture, configuration and software setup, but Bridge should be Off for best results.

Well I was only trying to help. You are right about the fact that with Bridge set to "Auto" in my original test "TS7 Utterly failed". After I changed the Bridge to OFF I did not fail as you had suggested and I missed. I hope CdeB has the same results.

It is most likely a bridge issue - related to hierarchical groupings would be my guess. You will find that some "glued" hierarchies do not mix well with the Bridge, taking a long time to send across from Modeler to Player and so making it look as if the program has crashed or hung.

This can be seen with things like the Text Tool too for example, which also creates a hierarchical grouping in way that is not Bridge-friendly. The handling of hierarchies and groupings changed in tS7 (due to the new data structures) and that means some of the old tools no long fit comfortably in the framework.

If you disable the Bridge while using those tools, you are in effect back in "just tS6.6" and they work as they used to. Then you can enable the Bridge when finished with those tools, which will synch everything from viewing in the Player or rendering in V-Ray.

HTH!

Thanks Guys,

I am glad there is a work around. Switched off bridge and had no problems!

Still, its a little curious why Steinie and I have the problem and Bobbins doesn't.

I will append my system spec here, in case this is relevant.

Dell machine P4 3.2, 1 Gb Ram, Nvida GeForce 6800 GTO card running on XP SP2.

I also have Mcaffee virus checker and windows defender (beta) going. Maybe they are robbing system resources. I am very irritated with the latest version of Macaffee virus checker as there seems to be no easy way to switch it off..unlike previous editions...anway a little OT

Glad there was a simple solution for me,
