This all happened in the model window and the items weren't constructed in tS7 so there was no history.


I loaded a scn that I wanted to use the same lighting setup for another object. I deleted the current model loaded in the new model then hit "save". I realised my mistake straight away - I should have gone to "save as" new scene. No problem get the back-up file (.bak) from the original version of the file, rename to a new name with .scn extension and I should have the original file back.


The trouble is it didn't work! The .bak file was one with the new object not the old object. The two (bak and scn) files had the same date stamp. Seemed to defeat the purpose of having an auto backup! Anyone else had problems with this? Is there something I'm missing or is this a genuine bug?

I guess the scene is backed up as soon as you open it, so if you have opened the scene with the deleted objects once, the backup is created with deleted objects as well. You might increase the number of backup files, harddisk space is not the big deal nowadays ;)

S'funny-this has saved my bacon on more than one occasion when I hit CTRL-S by mistake and wrote over an important scene. Closed TS, opened the .bak file and the old scene was there....phew!...:)

GraySho, What your saying is the backup happens everytime you save? Is that it? I thought bak files were a file created a save earlier if you get me.

Eg. I save at 9.10 then I save again at 9.30. When I save the 2nd time the bak file becomes the file that was saved at 9.10. That is, the previous bak is deleted the current scn is renamed bak and the save just performed writes a new scn file. Is that not the way backup in tS works? (I'm sure its how some other programmes I've used do it such as Autocad and CorelDraw.)

Here was my test in tS6.6 and tS7


1. New scene, add cube, File->Save As->Scene


2. Add sphere, File->Save->Scene


3. Load .scn, and it has the cube and the sphere


4. Rename the .bak to .scn and load, and it has just the cube



So that works as expected.


Also tried


1. New Scene, Load Scene saved with Sphere and Cube, add Cone.


2. File -> Save


3. Datestamp on .bak file is now different from the .scn, and on loading the .bak, I get the sphere and the cube but no cone. Loading the saved scene has all three objects.


So again seems to be working as expected.


Could you run these tests and see if they work for you?

Not really. I meant that it could be backed up whenever you are opening a scene, but I could be wrong. Another point that comes to my mind is that there was no backup file before, and the backup was created when you saved the scene with the new model. The matching time stamp would explain that.


For reusing light setups I highly recommend the light library. It's very easy to switch quickly between light setups for different purposes like modeling, texturing, final rendering, day and night and so on.

Thanks guys for the advice - I'll try the test check when I get home (I tend to look at the forums from work).


I'm not sure - maybe I closed the program down before renaming the file....

I did try doing much the same exercise with simple shapes and it did work the way I expected a bak should. That is the bak reflected the initial state. (Still scratching my head tring to figure out what went wrong when I really wanted it to work)
