I saw some earlier threads concerning losing customizations of the layouts not sticking. It seemed that most of the discussion was early on, and I'm wondering if there are some known workarounds.

I spent some time re-arranging my layouts (using the new bigger view aspect toolbar), and it seemed to save, but any time I leave the view and come back it resets back to the old way.

I did use the "Save Current State" icon and overwrite default.ctx, but that didn't seem to make any difference.

I am doing this for an 1152x864 display (compromise between seeing a lot and having things be too small).

Sorry if this has been hashed out before, but I didn't get a clear answer to how to overcome the problem but it sounded like some people have gotten their customizations to "stick".

when you have the layout you want with the large toolbar use "Save Current State" icon.....what works for me is to make a back up copy of the over written default.ctx..{keep it in another folder so it won't get modified} an exported copy of my layout too [just in case]... deleting the default.ctx when something goes wrong and replacing it with a backup copy which restores most things, even keeping the large icon toolbars intact in a layout...... the toolbar gets replaced in every layout if setup right..

Well I did replace the default.ctx file and it comes up OK when I restart Truespace, but....

When I switch to the "Full" Layout and then go back to the updated "Default" layout it reverts back to the old positions of the toolbars etc.

As a partial workaround I created yet another layout called Preferred and saved it in the Layout library. Now whenever I click on Preferred it uses the layout I want.

I also created a new layout called "Big" that is essentially the "Full" layout but with my preferences and leaving the "Layout" library resized and sitting in the corner (so I can switch between layouts).

This allows me to switch between the two layouts that I seem to use most (default/preferred - so I can access the LE, full/big - so I can see the most of my model).

Not necessarily ideal but its seeming to work for me now.

What you describe is correct operation of the tS7 interface. If you want a custom layout, you create and save it. If you want to return to that layout then you select the layout you created.

The default.ctx file is not the same as the standard default layout.

how did you install the large view aspect toolbar?

one thing ..BEFORE you leave a layout you have altered you MUST save it in the layouts library, or it's not retained .. then save current state again.[make a backup of that new .ctx too].some things don't get saved in the layout, but in the .ctx ..like altering images on icons ..some custom toolbars..

saving backups of the .ctx is a fail safe in case the one in use becomes corrupt..or you wish to go back to an earlier configuration of your layouts..

I installed the large view aspect toolbar using the bigtoolbarloader.RsObj.

Actually the big toolbar stayed and worked great in all layouts, it was just the stimulous for rearranging my layouts. Then I ran into issues getting the positions that I had moved these toolbars to "stay", with the final (and apparently intended) solution of creating two new layouts.

One thing from a new user of TS7 - it was not easy to figure out how to "save" the layout. The means I found was to go into the Layouts library and do "Replace Layout".

yes use "replace layout" as you build a layout..to keep toolbars in place you need to nail them.. http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=226

I agree it is very difficult to create and save custom layouts..

I can understand how difficult it can be for new user to grasp Layout scenario. When I get a chance to talk to new trueSpace7 users, I take them on a brief tour of the scenario. I first suggest that they "export" the current Layouts Library and save to a safe place with a name that designates its "time" or "old" or "original" or such. Then I take them through the process of either deleting any of the Layouts they do not believe they will use (avoids clutter on top row of tabs for layouts). Once that is done, I step them through simple creation of a few custom toolbars by control+drag. I then walk them through inserting this new Layout into the Layout Library, ensure they see a new tab created for this new layout and then let them switch layouts back and forth to see that it is saved correctly. Once I run them through this initial Layout scenario, they are "good to go" on the Layout scenario.

The important thing to remember here is that with two halves of trueSpace7; trueSpace6/Model and the new trueSpace7/Player, the only real way to safely secure your toolbar placement and locations is through the Player Layout Library. The Model side scenario only configures that side. At some point in future, when tools are all ported to new technology and the Model side retired, we will only have the Player side to save and it will be much better.

Hope is helpful.
