When using truespace i find that alot of the time when coming to rendering a scene to file all the icons dissappear completely, and then as soon as you try and save true space crashes.

Anybody having the same problems?

That is a rather odd problem. I can't say I've had anything like that happen to me, but I do recall seeing something somewhere about someone having a similar prob. I think they managed to find a solution to it, but don't recall what it was. Do a search on the forum, it's bound to be here somewhere.

Blank icons on startup is usually caused by not having the display in 32 bit depth mode - 16 bit display modes certainly cause blank icons.

If your icons are disappearing when rendering it sounds more like your system is running out of resources to allocate to trueSpace, probably GDI resources. Rendering can be a very resource hungry procedure so it's always a good idea to limit the number of other processes and applications running on your system at the time. As long as you have a reasonable amount of RAM in the system and haven't had to make any tweaks to the registry or system settings for any reason you should be OK.

Does this happen every time you render - even something simple like a cube or is it with scenes with hi-poly counts or large numbers of textures (especially HDRI maps in Lightworks)? Which render engine are you using and what happens if you shut down everything you can before running trueSpace?

Good call Bobbins. Looking at the programs stoker has loaded on his lower win bar would choke a horse when it comes time to render.

This does happen quite alot. I dont usualy have as many programs running as that, but doesnt make that much difference when I have a system running 4gb ram (Kingston, Dual Channel).

This never happens where rendering an object like a cube. This problem also occurs on my laptop so i know it is not anything to do my machine.

This problem is not caused on startup, it either occurs when rendering or coming to try and save a scene.

A very sickly foal that's about to be put down, perhaps - but a horse??? I'd have to say neigh to that 1. :) I have way more running than he does, only have 2GB RAM, & I've still got over 950MB unused at the moment.

As he has twice the memory that I do, I don't think it's possible that he's running out of memory, unless 1 of his progs has a memory leak or something.

The number of GDI objects that can be created is a fixed number, irrespective of the amount RAM available. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/sysinfo/base/gdi_objects.asp for a little bit of information. You can then open up the Task Manager and add the GDI Objects column (View->Select Columns), and start adding up the total number of GDI objects in use on the machine.

Would video card settings have any effect on these results. For example OpenGl settings verses Direct3D. How much video ram do your cards have?

I have seen these results myself but only when resourses are very low.

Well, regardless of whether it's a case of memory, GDI handles, or whatever else, the only way what he's got running could have anything to do with it is if 1 of those progs is - for want of a better description - misbehaving.

Even a more major issue here in regards to resources is — Are you switching between programs while this rendering is taking place? I have seen this all to often even with trueSpace 6.6 and Vue Infinity 5.

After looking closer at your screen shot Alien I can see your point about resources. The question then is can you duplicate this missing icon problem?

I do not believe this is an issue with truespace7.

Stoker, did you try setting colour depth to 32bit? Last time I saw this problem-that was the cause. Are you also running TS6.6?

A final cure here might be to uninstall TS7-remove all traces from C: then run regedit and also remove references to Caligari Rosetta Platform and Caligari trueSpace 7. Reinstall making sure you reboot before running TS7.

If all these fail I would look for your problem elsewhere. Do both machines run P2P stuff or any other program that may be causing a conflict?

I know the question was directed at Stoker, but I just tried switching whilst rendering, granted all I had were 2 planes quad divided 3 times each with a high-ish res texture & 4x AA turned on, so nothing too taxing, but I could freely switch to other progs & back with no probs whatsoever, not even the slightest glitch in my internet radio being played via Winamp, & no corruption of the render.

Nope. Tried setting my display to 16bit colour, but buttons still looked normal. I must confess I'm not convinced my system really did change to 16bit, despite what my settings reported.

I havent tried changing the colour depth to 32bit, that could be the problem. As you will know Paul I have reinstalled many times and I dont have TS6.6 on my machine at all.

P2P stuff I dont have running as when that is running you cant even start truespace up.

I will try change the colour depth tonight as I cant do anything at the moment as I am at school:mad:

Cheers Paul, setting colour depth to 32bit does the trick.:) Being using True Space for over an hour now, dont seem to be having any problems with the icons dissapearing.
