Thought I'd post what I have so far in here since I plan to develop it more after the competition and do several different scenes on the theme...

This one took about 3 hours with a lot of experimenting in 7.6 realtime cloth simulation which didn't work out so far :( haven't got the hang of it and the cloth sometimes collapses on itself and crumbles up into a ball almost, so this image was a straight model space render instead of a nice wind/cloth simulation snapshot I wanted to do... will post the cloth collapse occurrance in the tech forums soon and perhaps later do a snapshot version of this image...

anyways, here goes...

thought of doing something different than the tradition "boat on water idea" so I made it a 'hover' boat sailing over the desert, futuristic but with ancient 'sails' merely for esthetic/decorative purposes while the oars could move and might be manned by android/robots also for esthetics/decoration while the oar tips have the actual 'hover' drive motors that keeps the ship aloft and steers it...

still want to add small changes like mooring ropes for the masts and sails, a rudder section which is totally optional since the ship is puter driven with autopilots but again for esthetic/decorative purposes it can be steered manually... depending on if the cloth simulation failures counts as part of the 4hour model time limit, will add these to the model bits to the SMC entry before I submit it...

ps. the backdrop i did months ago as a standard image and is not modeled in tS, it was done in the Vue 6 PLE version [which is not nice to work with with its watermarks] but this images is one that came out quit well... the area under the boat is a trueSpace plane with a leather bump map shader...

also want to spend more time refining the textures, perhaps have an all wood effect on the keel and cabin like I have on the deck... spent most of the time on the modeling and just slapped on some textures for effect...

TBC...

I think this is looking really nice already, only thing I'm not keen on is some of the textures - hull looks kind of shiny but like it's reflecting something not there... A nice chromed hull, reflecting the desert would be quite cool (thinking Naboo royal startships etc)...

It's a really interesting design and already looking quite polished - wil lbe interested in seeing how it shapes up...

Thanks Nez, yeah, only started modeling last night so the texturing needs a lot of work... will work on it, still got a couple of days...

Tnx TrueSpaced, it reminded me of the Star Wars scene on Tatooine near that worm creature pit... ;)

here is an update... had another weird occurrence lat night, i navigate between views a lot using keyboard shortcuts but something strange is happening if i press some key/mouse combination too quickly or often, some of the objects gets displaced and rotated and even scaled out of place where i had them! :( this happened a few times to my utter frustration since i had to reposition them again with care, which took a lot of time, until i glued them together in groups so it doesn't happen again, anybody found that?

anyways, here is an update...

added different wooden textures on the boat, still needs work...

added mooring ropes on the boat...

added desert mushroom forest...

added some depth cue...

added 'sand sharks' circling the boat on either side ...

That's looking great, such a cool concept. I really like the mushrooms, particularly at such a scale - a really neat twist. The sand sharks make me think of Tremmors....

Whilst the ship makes me think of somewhere between a pod-racer and the little solar-sail ship that I think Dooku uses...

I'm not too keen on the wood effect on the hull although it's an interesting contrast to such a modern design. What I think would look really cool would be some 'jet wash' or at least some haze beneath the oar-fans, like a heat haze effect to show the air disturbance.... might be able to do with a bit of post-process blur? Probably easier said than done though.

Great job.

Thanks Nez :)

I was thinking of 'jet wash' or a dust cloud trailing the boat and the sharks to convey speed and travel but don't know how to do that yet...

no idea how post-process blur works, will have to look it up first...

Cool picture - great concept - I'm a big scifi fan.

Re the hover wash blur effect try using alpha planes or cylinders with a hazy image - or in LW the Glow shader can be fun to use too.

This sort of blurry effect has the advantage of casting shadows on the scene which post processed effects don't do.
