Long time since ive posted much on here, but I decided to give the workspace a bit of a run. I am trying to start an underwater scene here, but its quite challenging, im using the hair tool for the weird coral spikes on the rock, though not so succesfully, needs tweaking (perhaps much thicker coverage), I intend to cover the rock in more coral formations, and also have more rocks on the sand and perhaps a school of fish. My main problem will be to make it appear as though its underwater, as volumetrics are not possible at present I guess ill have to do it all in post processing.

The lighting is already very good, it does feel like underwater environment.

You could cheat the underwater effect like I do; using a caustic map on a projector light and some semi-transparent cones;

Nice work Matski!

Splinters - LOL, sometimes the good old fashioned ways are still very useful!

Brings back memories. Remember the Vertex painter?

I agree with splinters. Projector lights are the way to go. :)

thanks guys, I think ill worry about the other effects later but I have added a projector light for the caustics effects, I kinda like it heh. This is th elatest updates, I have hadded an undersea volcano though i think it still may need work, I cant tell you how much fun using the modelling tools in workspace is heh, so intuative and this is the first time I have properly used it

Looking real good even now! Can only get better if you have more planned for it :) Thanks for sharing!

The caustic generator can come in handy for projection in underwater scenes

Awesome link Peter! Thanks!!

@Matski, the rocks are looking great, but the plants seem kinda fuzzy...

I liked the fuzzy look on the plants - perhaps lots of small hairs, perhaps bubbles, perhaps some slimey stuff that you get in water growing where it gets calm water amongst the plant fronds, all making them look less than sharp compared to the cleaner rocks. So that didn't really jump out at me as a problem at all :)

Ah, but that's the problem Tom, it looks over sharp. As in a kind of random noise sort of fuzzy that would be unnatural to see underwater.

Aha, now making the rocks a wee bit more fuzzy too I could see being good, to add that "debris in the water" - all those small particles will make things blurry, so some blurriness in rocks would be good (even better if it increases with distance - could be added post process with a depth mask).

So fuzzy plants good, but fuzzy rocks better (just not as fuzzy as the plants)

LOL I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree and see how Matski takes the project. It's already shaping up to be very interesting.

It's looking really good so far Matski :D

The only things I noticed were that the fuzzy things in the back don't seem to "match" the rest of the scene... Idk exactly what it is. The actual object that you made the hairs on may need to have its color changed to something more similar to the hair color..

Another thing is to maybe put some hardened lava near the underwater volcano; the rocks in the scene look a bit too "clean", especially near the volcano :p

Other than that, looking awesome! Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.... :D

Nice one! I like underwater scenes btw.

I have not posted here much, but still I dare to post come comments :)

One thing I noticed is the red colors used, in the distant plants, and in lava.

Water absorbs red light very quickly..

This link COLOR UNDERWATER has some nice information about that..

The lava underwater cools very quickly Here (http://www.punaridge.org/doc/factoids/Eruptions/Default.htm) is a link about lava flows underwater... EDIT: Just found this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsJn8izcKtg) googling.

As a side note, there are so many unexplored things underseas.

Some interesting underwater footage here:

"The exploration of the deep sea is one of the great scientific challenges of the future. This is a gigantic area. Covering two thirds of the earth’s surface, it is an unknown world with bizarre geological structures and exotic inhabitants. So far, only one percent of the deep ocean habitat has been explored."

Hi Matski. Great topic and a great scene; its looking really good. Strangely enough, I'm doing a sub for the SMC so am also trying out various lighting and caustic effects.
