I've been seeing a lot of activity lately surrounding the JT file format promoted by UGS (of Unigraphics fame) and several other companies. Our engineers are going wild, plonking JT models into Powerpoints whenever they get the chance.

I'm not that impressed. Viewpoint has been around for a while, and at the moment Adobe is pushing forward with Acrobat3D, integrating U3D into Acrobat Reader 7.0. So why the fuss about JT?

The visual quality of most of the models I've seen is ho-hum. I believe this is because CAD tools are CAD tools and not "modelers". You don't usually include bump maps and reflectance shaders in your CAD designs.

So why not market tS as a "brush up" tool for CAD models, a sort of in-between texturing & prettifying step for publishing virtual prototypes (generating JT or U3D as output).
