In 1986 at Siggraph I was showing a short video created on Amiga PC with prototype of what eventualy became trueSpace. It was called: "We built a city". I got the idea to do it again, only this time with a help of my friends and build it online.

If you check truePlay 2D web site, you will notice that a lot of content there was created by trueSpace users, for example on this page: http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts7/Brochure/record.asp?SubCate=S2record&Cate=ts7

I decided to credit each artist right under the image with the content they created rather than just putting their names in small print at the bottom. BTW if we messed up or forgot to give you a credit, please let us know. Mystery Shape scene has no author, I am thinking Mike Harris did that but I am not sure, could be Paul Woodward. We will be adding more 3D recordings, scenes and activities all the time, and I hope that majority of new ones will be user created.

We are also planning to add user created shared spaces to 3D truePlay portal as well. I checked the portal and it is stable and fast for me but I hear some guys had problems, please let us know what does not work and what would you like to see. Default cameras and 3D record scrubber are already on my list.

I want to thank Paul Ashington, Norm and Paul Woodward for doing a great job putting the initial portal together. I am also looking forward to adding 3D shared spaces created by you guys on this Forum.

No mystery shapes from me Roman....;)

Can we add grid display/colour options and AA settings to your list?

Mystery shape is not from me Roman, Paul A? David B? I remember it being an early Player PE test I think. As far as the truePlay portal is concerned, I think Micks post about his out-of-box experience is very good. First impressions are more crucial than they've ever been on the web. You're absolutely correct, sharing really inspires everyone to create.

Sounds like a fun idea. :) Perhaps if there was an online room made where there are defined 3d plots (so to speak) where people can build stuff in their own little plot. We could build any kind of strange creative dwelling on our plot that we would like. Maybe have some larger community plots where we can all work on pieces of it (like amusement parks, zoos, etc) where people can add different rides/features. Some things could be animated or interactive (like rides).

I suppose we would probably need to define some default measurements before we start (like how tall an average "life form" is in this 3d world) to make everything fit relatively. Maybe have a predefined ground to work off of, or maybe just have it a floating city. Perhaps even at some point people can make characters that can walk/fly through and interact with this 3d city like a video game. Could be a lot of fun. :)

As for truePlay, it really works pretty good for me. I am having a little trouble with not being able to manipulate the script objects though. I too would like to have AA and it would be nice to have fast forward and rewind ability when playing a recording. Perhaps even a little scrubber to move through the recording like most video players have. Also, it doesn't seem that the remember checkbox actually remembers usernames or passwords. All in all, I think it's looking pretty good though. :)

Building a city would be fabulous!! Lets start. Need portals so that each area doesn't get to big but TruePlay already has that as it is. Maybe time periods, or styles to match up to the different portals. I am with Dele, need some solid measurements to work from plus area size for each portal if that idea is used.

I have a few questions about truePlay and a "trueTown" project :

It seems that truePlay needs to re-load everything each time I connect to the main scene. If we plan to build a trueTown, truePlay should be able to load objects already downloaded in the lasts sessions directly from the HD instead of the server.

I also noticed that tP objects seems to take more time to download than other 3D multi-users formats -like ActiveWorlds for example-

Well, in fact I always dreamed of an ActiveWorlds engine with true dynamic lightening :) and truePlay could be a chance to build photorealistic multi-users worlds.

But if we have a limit here, with scene sizes or download speeds, people will only create very small or simple worlds...

For instance, could we allow people for browsing a serie of 3D scenes -I should call it a world, made of several levels- from a DVD-Rom rather than a server (usefull if the world is 1 or 2Gb!) AND use the multi-users system of truePlay at the same time ?

That is a good idea; putting the stuff in a local cache of the user's choosing. Add an option to clear the cache or set limits and that would be useful too. Can be a bit of a pain downloading stuff all the time-especially if you have just visited or even when you return to the main portal. I know size is a limit at the moment so some system would be necessary to enable larger scenes...

Yep - Google Earth does this. FILO with a configurable size cache.. Same reasons.. I'd be so bold as to say that without this, the whole concept (of TrueTown) will fail for usability reasons..

I would have to agree to an extent. I have 2mb broadband connection and if I were on any slower I might get a bit bored just waiting for the portal elements to download and go off to do something else. Really big files may never get seen by the public if they take ages to download. Wonder what the LAN options would be for large design studios or educational training...
