Well, I started this for the speed model challenge, but at this point I'm way over the time limit. I'm having fun playing with it, so now it's a work in progress. :D

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. I guess I'll sort of see where it takes me.

Some cloth anim on the sailcloth would be fun

Wow, great model Heidi. If you could redo that in under 2 hours I think you would have a real winner for the SMC.

Nice work! It's already looking great Heidi and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. :)

Thanks guys :)

Right now the sails are modeled. Whether or not I use cloth sim for them will sort of depend on what I end up doing with the model.

Thanks Kena :)

I just put some winches and an abbreviated version of some standing rig on her. Now I'm going to see whether I can get her mapped and textured. Then I can see whether I need to add more modeled detail.

The details really add nicely to the overall impression. This is really coming along. :)

At this point I stopped tracking my modeling time on it... a little here, a little there... I'm enjoying the process. It's been a long time since I've played with boats.

Don't worry, I'll figure out one that I can do in the time limit. :)

I've always wondered.. How do you start something like that? What object do you start with? I've never been able to get results like that! Very good work :)

Truespaced, they say a picture is worth a thousand words...sooo...

Here's the progression of the modeling process. I started with a cube primitive. I know boats are normally designed using half-hulls, but I didn't use mirror-modelling for this one.

The top faces were removed for the first subdivision of the hull then history removed. I then added a top face to the subdivided hull to model the cabin and cockpit. At that point I did a second subdivision. So the hull has two subdivisions and the cabin and cockpit have a single subdivision.

The first sail (jib) was extruded from the top outer edge of the hull, then separated from the object. The diagonal edges were added to shap the curve of the sail. The second (main) sail was created by duplicating the first one, then flattening the bottom verticed so the foot of the sail would lay along the boom.

The final progression was to apply the rigging, rudder and tiller.

Believe it or not my question is how did you go from step one to step two? Did you use the add polygons and modify or did you add segments when you created the cube and move the vertexes around?

Sailing, takes me away...to where I've always heard it could be :p

I've got a copy of that song done by an A capella group called "The Blenders". It's a really nice rendition of the song. I like to listen to every once in a while.

Anyway...Nice work on the sailboat so far Heidi. I can't wait to see it finished. :)

Steinie, I sort of just started with really general shape and kept adding loops and refining the shape as I went. That's one reason I opted to not use mirror-modeling. It was easier for me to work with the loops.

Before it had looked like a large jump from step 1 to 2. This clears it up. Thanks for sharing.

Now the real fun begins... when you start stringing ropes!

hehehe... I don't.... there aren't any 'ropes' on a boat. :D

On a boat, a 'rope' is referred to as a 'line', unless it's used to trim a sail. Then it's a 'sheet'. :)

But you're right. There's more detail to be added. I'll be working on that when I start working on the texturing.

Whatever you want to call them, have fun making them.
I've always had good luck with NURBS, but if you want to stay in Workspace you'll have to come up with a different method.

ooh Heidi I just love it when you talk nautical!!

I also agree with your comments about modeling with loops - I just love this method and since I got to grips with it I've not done any modeling at all in Model (though I did go over there to use the Bend tool on some text I'd made).

Very cool little yacht - you have a good eye for the lines.
