After recently leaving the Project kursed team and its future uncertain, the work I produced for the project was released from the non-disclosure agreement so I'm free to post it

Which I will, I like it a bit too much.

It appears me and schattendorn work quite well together, once again this is designed by him which we made for the project, so we've now got no-where to stick it.

I will never complain about long render times, the second image took 9 hours, and it wasn't overnight.

Links for the much larger image on Schattendorns DA page (please check it out, he'll appreciate it)

As usual made in Truespace 6.6

Great work weevil. Hopefully you will be able resurrect this in a future project. It is far too good to not be used elsewhere.

Mr. 3d...you certainly have a distinct look and feel to your work. Without even looking at who posted the space pic I could just tell that it was yours. I think that is a great thing!!

By all means...If you can make a scene that reminds me of captain scarlet out of one of my objects, more power to you.

Very nice model, hope to see more of it, and perhaps others arising out of this collaboration too!

Thanks!

Thanks froo, and thanks tom

I hope we can do more with it, seems a bit of a shame to not do anything with it, aside from maybe doing a test animation

My first animation in a decent few years, its fun when it works, but rendering is really annoying, no SFX or anything like that because it just ramps up the render time. It took 3 days as it stands, with no possibility of overnight rendering I had to do it in 5 parts when I had the time and compile it all.

Music was a royalty free piece I nabbed for, oddly, an animation assignment, and the speech I had a browse through what games I had, specifically "1946"

Enjoy

it's a great model, really nice design - as already said, it would be a shame not to find a use for it... reminds me of all sorts of sci-fi vehicles - a touch of the drop ships in Starship Troopers, a bit of the landing craft in Aliens, plus a bit of Firefly and others... You've got so many cool vehicles, you need to come up with some big battle scene or something!

I know what you mean about animating though - I just don't bother as the time is just not practical at the mo - it's the one thing that has me interested in moving my models into Workspace and mastering real-time texturing as the rendering is so fast, but I can't see that happening for a while yet for me...

One idea on render time might be to have an older PC on hand to do it - it won't matter if it can handle tS workspace real-time (assuming you aren't using real-time rendering), so can be pretty old. Sure it will render slower than a new machine, but you can start it off and leave it running 24/7, and keeping your main machine free.

So you could go for something very old and cheap, if you don't have an old machine lying around already (I always end up with older machines laying around!). Just an idea if you did want to get into rendering, use the clunky old one to do that job and keep your newer machine free for regular use.

HTH!

Thanks nez, schatt did a good job with that design

Unfortunately the reasons im having these difficluties is because overnight renders are a "no" either way, I like the way TS (6.6 at least) only takes up 50% give or take 1 or 2% when its grinding away so I can do other things

But no SFX is a bit of an issue though

just out of curiosity, why are overnighters not an option? you may have said somewhere already but I don't recall seeing elsewhere...

Have you considered looking at adding some special effects post-process? there's a few folks on here with some expertise with programmes like After Effects and others who could probably offer some tips....

Well the overnight renders are not an option simply because of a few reasons, the first being I know truespace has a bit of a habit of saying "fatal error in rendering please save your work and restart truespace", if that happens at 1 in the morning say, it'll just be sitting idle for a few hours. Second one being the noise will probably keep people up

As for video editing, man I'd love to try it, but any video editing software that can do SFX is out of my price range atm, which is a shame (unless you know of any cheapy or free ones ;))

Rendering to still images will mean if it does crash, you can just resume from where you left off next time (one of the reasons for using a sequence of stills rather than AVIs).

For a while me and my computer shared the same room, it was about 4 feet from my head while I slept. It ran 24/7, just as it does now ;) Sleeping to the whirring fans of technology doesn't bother me though, it's somewhat like sleeping on a ship where the noise of the generators is a constant drone.

Of course, even if you were able to put up with that, convincing other people to do so might not be so easy! So another option might be to "community render farm" it and share the scene with those who can render it on machines running over night.

Thanks!

Tom

Oddly enough I had to do this render in 6 parts, 3 of them due to render errors, providing I remember what frame it stopped at I just carry it on again.

Your second idea does sound like a nice idea though, definately something to look into if anyone can (if i decide to do another animation from now to whenever)

Thanks

that animation is really good, the camera work reminds me of battlester galactica, all the moving around of centre. Love the design too.

Add a background and some little effects like dust blowing up under the ship and you've got a first class piece of work

Very nice, like how the camera looks to be operated by a person, not really smooth, shifting focus etc. I like it. :)

A fantastic model and an even better animation. Def see the BSG influence.:D Would be more than happy to try and render this out for you on one of my spare machines and perhaps even add a SFX or two.

Definately interested in your offer Breech, thats a very intersting idea

(and yes I admit the battlestar galactica references, but I absolutely love that style, and the models too)

I said that as meaning a good thing. :) I love BSG and have all 4 seasons on DVD plus the series Pilot and the Razor Special Edition DVDs. I love the style and pace and I thought you captured that spot on.
