This was inspired by the video posted in this (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=7208) thread. I managed to mostly follow it okay, but the lack of a noise modifier was hard. Anyway, I still think ts can do a good job. :D

The mix maps he used were a challenge, but I used multiple passes and used the xray darktree material as a mix map in gimp for the diffuse colours. I used this render again afterwards for a touch of rim lighting. I rendered out a sss map in dribble and used it to mask another colour layer (after desaturizing it, the sss settings I used were originally for skin) for some subtle scattering.

I also did another render with a diffuse and specular layer, and just dragged the specular into the image from the resulting psd.

You can mix and match renders from lightworks and dribble as long as you don't antialias which is why this is a bit jaggy. If it was for work I would have rendered it much larger and downsampled it after in gimp.

Finally I did ibl lighting on a white base and used this to deepen the shadows. This was all done using the default lighting setup although it's not really recognizable after all of the layer work.

It would be possible to do this as a straight render, but using layers in gimp is much easier. All in all, a fun little experiment.:)

Here is the image and some of the renders I used:
