This is my attempt at a fun, warm-n-cozy image of a dad and his little boy, done in my usual minimalistic style.

http://www.frankladner.com/images/pointing.jpg

The key illumination comes from a single spotlight, outside the window. For the bouncy secondary light effect, I used several colored omnis at low intensity, with squared attenuation turned on. A had a single light between the window and the subjects with Volumetrics enabled (subtle result). Original image rendered at 1860 x 870 with 2X Anti-Aliasing.

I did a bit of Photoshop work to get the final result, so I am attaching a file to show the unedited trueSpace render Vs. the final image.

(( Photoshop work consisted of duplicating the layer w/ top layer set to overlay, blurred, lightened, flattened, and slight curves adjustments. ))

This would make a nice Father's Day card. You almost didn't need Photoshop looking at the original.

Your minimalistic style is less than Oriental Gardens!

Is the little boy saying "YES Dad, I put ALL the furniture out there..............AND Mom":D

Ha ha! I left that open to interpretation. :)

My mum always told me it was rude to point....

Lovely, simple work Frank which appeals to my own style and it would make a nice card. I am currently doing the rounds of greeting card/calendar companies with my piggy posters.

Apparently on artwork alone they will often pay £75-£300 for the image. They get the rights but it is a fast buck if you can churn out a range of these and don't want to hold on to the rights for future use. With the pigs that just would not work.

Just a thought...

Thanks, Splinters!

Good luck with your greeting card / calendar thing there. You have quite a few piggy pics! Keep us updated on how it goes.

Hrm - I'm not sure if my stuff is good enough for cards but I appreciate the comments! ...even if I did get ONE that was suitable, I don't reckon I could keep churning a bunch of 'em out.

Will do Frank but I do not want to hijack your thread-just following up on the greeting card suggestion.

Oh, and it is good enough...beautiful design is simple design.

I really like this one Frank. It just goes to show that you don't need thousands of polygons and hundreds of texture to produce a stylish and thought provoking image. Bravo Sir

Lovely and stylish. I like the subtle expression/pose of the characters, even though they are just "flat" :D. The lighting falls in the "painting with light" category.

Ah, I'm so glad you filleted the edges! That's great work there, love the contrasting orange and blue. Very classy.

There's something about this that makes you look at it for far longer than you think you would! A really clean and classy pic Frank, absolutely fantastic.

(If we're going for captions, the first that sprung to mind was "this aquarium's rubbish, dad - there's no fish")

Thanks for the kind words, Johnny, Mad Mouse, GraySho, Methusela, and TheWitch!

HA HA! You guys come up with some good ideas! If I do start putting captions on them, I know where to come for suggestions. This tS bunch is a clever one.

Thanks again, everyone!

FWIW I'd call this a first class illustration! Wel done Frank. I love the contrast between the highly detailed and sophisticated lighting and the extreme simplicity of the figures. There's a fascinating tension between the 3d scene and the 2d subject - and the Witch is perfectly correct, it's easy to look at this for far longer than one would expect given such a simple scene.

This is very clever IMHO and I like it a lot.

Another one. Was gonna use different characters but decided to keep the same two, in (nearly) the same poses.

gotta keep the same people...for a few more at least... :)

over the course of several images..knowing what you can do....i am sure the effect will be most surreal.

I see a giant fly sooner or later.

Thanks Vinny & TheWitch!

I had thought of maybe a continuous link with the images. The first image, the boy was pointing out the window (maybe at the trees)....and in the next image they are in the woods. ...and then the next one is linked somehow to the tree image. ...or maybe the next one will be something altogether different. Not sure.

LOL! You guys crack me up (giant fly & witch w/ broken arm).

Beautiful work again Frank. Are you sure you don't want to push these as greetings cards? A little sparkly snow on that last one and you have a lovely Xmas card. Hell, you could just make a few for friends.
I was hoping to use a similar 'minimalistic' style for my next book project but I don't want to rip off yours...:D

I wouldn't consider it ripping me off if you used the same style. Go for it!

It seems to me that ultimately most things have been done or thought of so we get inspiration here and there, picking it up from the work of others - likely not 100% from our own ideas.

I could attribute some of my style influences to maybe Ricardo Biriba (http://www.biriba.net/run_dragon/), KateClay, Boring3D, Arild Wiro, among others. ...and they in turn were influenced by someone or something else.

Cheers Frank, my next project is about a cloud...just the one, and a small curious boy. Surely a creative mind like yours is already piecing that one together...:D

Now, how to get a nice fluffy (but 3D cloud) that has character without any facial/bodily features.

Chester: Ha ha! Box and Naked Mining Guy...wonder what ever became of them.

Splinters: Anytime a trueSpace user mentions doing clouds, Pyrocluster springs to mind BUT for your purposes this would obviously have to be geometry. Hrm... Since we're kinda talking about Boring3D.com have you seen some of those clouds?

One of the projects I'm currently working on has clouds. Swept and shaped cube, two levels of SDS and, voila, one very acceptable cloud - I was expecting to struggle but was surprised at how easy it was and how good the end result turned out. HTH

TheWitch: This current project...will we get to see it?

Splinters: One tip I'll throw out if you are giong for the soft look: Try using duplicate objects. The first one is shaded solid, and a copy of it is scaled up a bit, and shaded semi-transparent. There are a couple of transparency shaders (one included with tS and one that CK Game Factory put out) to help this effect.

Thank you, Brian!

When it comes to the render quality aspect, I usually beef up shadow maps (Size=2048, Quality = 9), turn on 2x or 3x AA, and render out to a size larger than required.

...also, I forgot to mention that in the first image there is a light in the window with Volumetrics enabled.

Metaballs work like a charm for clouds. Set them on relatively low resolution, extract the mesh itself, then subdivide to desired smoothness.
