Ok, here it is. Everyone, who read my thread on the WIP http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=548
probably expect something ultraspectacular. Well, you'll get it but first ...
Here's what I wanted to do as a first test for my baby:
This is the untouched original (© 1983 Warner Bros., an AOL Time Warner
Company, used for non-commercial educational purposes):
http://www.kanetti.fi/~loadus/v/scene_original.jpg
Then my re-edit composition:
http://www.kanetti.fi/~loadus/v/render.jpg
And ... I forgot to texture the cap on the underbelly properly AND
I forgot to make the most important change into the IBL source...
Always paint the top WHITE, so you get highlights right. You see
the highlights ... BLUE!! Nooooo...
Oh, well, it was just a 2h render. :D |

Looks awesome.
2 things though...
1. forum limit on image size is 800x600, but if you were to resize them to no bigger than 930 wide [scrolling issues for people using lower screen res] I don't think anyone would complain. ;)
2. there appears to be 2 light blue vertical streaks on your version of the image.
<edit>
Also, while it is cool to be able to see the extra detail on the underside, I'm not sure you should be able to, given the size of the ship it seems likely that it would be darker underneath, as in the original.

It does rather look as if it were lit from below, also shouldn't there be some green bounce lighting on the bottom. Nice pic overall |

Well, if they were going to carry on with the new version of the series; I think your version of the ship would be the way to go. I agree with the light on the bottom; some more shadow needed there. But very nice.

Love your model, very neat test too!
You may know this, but I've found rendering like 1600x1200 and even higher and using a good 2d program and downsizing to like 800x600 gives outstanding AA quality, better then 4x AA when I use adaptive AA with rendering. Plus I've found it to be much faster overall in render speed.
In anycase you exceeded the quality of original image so if ship was way clearer it would not look part of the scene. Love to see this ship up close and personal :). |

Totally believable Loadus.
I love the second one.
I would love to buy that model if it were available at say renderosity.com or
wherever. |

Thanks for the comments!
And very VERY observing notes from you. The white streaks. What can I say - Lay-Zee. I just grabbed the plate from the sky to press the noise stamp into the model. The underbelly too lit? Well, I was thinking about the humidity in the air bleaching off the green bounce and diffusing the light to make it brighter. But I guess I overdid it. :)
Well, I'll cook up something new next .. let's see if we can see more detail ... |

Let's try the dramatic scene. Which is not action ...yet.

On a ship that size I would expect some blur or DOF between front and back of the ship due to the distance involved and the 'smog' and haze you might expect on a hot day....:D
Look at how blurred the ground is at that distance. Hard to get a pinpoint on the sun position too.
Still, way better than the original.. |

Nice work.
It is hard to get a really convincing ufo image against an existing photo. The colour information in the background will have it's own unique blend of blur, haze and focus etc which is hard to match when superimposing a model object in front of it. Whilst IBL's and other tecniques can give good colour matches it is always the comparative difference between the amount of blurriness of the original and the object.
With moving images the natural blur caused by motion masks this but it is extraordinarily difficult to acheive convincingly with still images. One solution that can help is to add noise or overall blur or to otherwise degrade the visual imformation but this leads to unsatisfying lo res images.
Given the excellent texture work you showed us in the WIP forum this image disappoints a little because it does not show your texture and modelling work to the best advantage
The dramatic picture you linked to at
http://www.kanetti.fi/~loadus/v/V%20in%20the%20clouds.jpg works best of all for me - that's a killer shot!
Good work. |

Loadus you have a winner with this whole project.
I see financial rewards here if you decide to go that route.
That linked picture is as good as it gets. |
