Depends on what render engine you are using. For YafaRay, try the Coated Glossy shader. ;) |

Currently I am using Lightworks that comes with version 7.6, I am gonna stick with that until I get used to the program which is slowly coming together now. |

There should be a car paint shader I think over on the Model (Legacy) side. Depends on what kind of paint, whether it features metal flake or not for instance. The Multilayer Paint is the one for Lightworks that is meant to give a metal flake like effect.
The main key to car paints would be to have some reflection, possible in many shaders without the need for a specialist one. Using a Fresnel effect shader would be best to capture how reflections change in strength depending on the angle of the surface to your line of sight - there isn't a native one for Lightworks, but you can find such shaders in the free ShaderLab, which is available for download (quick forum search should uncover its location).
For metallic paints, either use a metallic shader, or set your specular color to be similar / the same as your main color.
With materials, what works great in one scene, with one background, and one lighting set up, may not be so great in other set ups, so there isn't one perfect car paint material for example. Hopefully these tips will get you started! If you have images of a particular look you would like to achieve (either a photo or someone else's render), then we could offer advice on some specific set ups and materials to try.
HTH!

Try Prodigys latex shader.
I also got Awesome results in the realtime. with a modified metal reflectance shader by dbokon.
