Hey guys,

Well, this is a total newbie question :)

How do I copy a portion of a model and have it remain part of the same model?

This is a shot of a hand I'm working on. I just roughed in one finger using a cylinder, and I want to copy that rough for the other three fingers (note that the finger has not yet been attached to the rest of the model at the knuckle).

So I select the rought and hit the "Copy Object" button, and this is what I get once I move the copy (or perhaps the original?) over to the next area

It seems okay, except it's not considered part of the original model. Note that the first finger is solid, I can't select it's geometry at this point. Nothing appears in the 2D panel as a seperate object.

So what step am I missing to make a copy of something?

You can't copy a piece of 3D geometry from one place to another, unforunately. What you would be best to do is separate the finger, copy the separate model, then reunite fingers with hand - for that last step I'd recommend using boolean union while non-touching, then use the Form Polygonal Bridge tool on the workspace side.

By doing the Boolean Union while finger and hand are NOT touching, you avoid any creation of nasty faces, edges, etc. The Form Poly Bridge tool should do a nice job of providing a connection between the two - it would be best if the flat area on the hand had the same number of vertices as the flat area on the ends of the fingers, but it's not exactly necessary.

As a thought, the first step could be to select the finger faces then use the Separate Selected tool. This will give you finger and hand as separate objects.

Another thought - after attaching finger to hand, you may need to remove or merge some polys, depending on your design. The Poly Bridge may have created extra faces that you don't want, but tidying those up afterward manually is generally easier than trying to fix up a bad Boolean Union when things overlapped.

Okay, thanks Tom. I was hoping there was something easy. At this point, it's porobably just as easy to rerough each finger using a new cylinder rather than trying to seperate, copy, and boolean everything back together, heh. If there was a "one button" push I needed, that would have been easier, but since there isn't, I can do each one seperately.

A very common practice is to model 1 finger to the level of detail that you need for your finished model, than copy and paiste that finger onto the other parts of the hand. You just need to scale it to the correct proportions than.

Copy and paiste in the WS side PE, select the polys of the area you want to copy, CTRL C (to copy) CTRL V (to paste). Than just stitch them together using the pe tools. The copy command in the PE works good for this also. If the hand and the finger have the same number of polys a simple bridge will put it all together.

That's what I was looking for! Thanks Rich.

Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, who knew, hehe. I was hunting for a button, heh.

Sorry, Tom, I must not have been clear about what I was after.

This icon does the same thing.

My method may not require the CTRL V, I am just a trained monkey and do not change with progress.

Glad to help.

Nope, you were clear - this is just one of the benefits of the workspace tools I was unaware of, that you can in fact copy geometry without having to detach it from the original object first. Very neat! Being ingrained with Model side tools for years can do that to you.
