I cannot comment on the workspace side (image 1).... the second side is model with which I am more familiar.

First to paint a texture on a surface you will need to open the material editor. The material editor is in the row of icons on the bottom of your screen and looks like an artists palette. Click on the icon to open the material editor. I will refer to the material editor from here on as the ME.

When the ME is open, open your image browser if not already open, yours is, and select your image to apply.

Drag the image from the image browser to the channel you want to apply the texture to. If you want to use the texture as is drag to the colour channel. If you want to use the image to give the appearance of surface contours drag the image to the bump channel. Experiment with applying the image to each one of the channels and in combination to create some interesting effects.

One thing to mention here that is not really clear in the introductory tutorials.

The workspace and model side use different methods for applying textures to objects because their rendering systems and methods are different. If you are applying a simple image to the color channel of an object, and you have the bridge turned on, the applied image should appear pretty much the same in both sides. If you apply a procedural shader in the model side however, the result in the workspace side will not be the same. The computer language, syntax describing the shader will not work on both sides.

To get a really good idea of how to texture in the model side I suggest you look for a tutorial in the caligari training section by Norbert Esser. The tutorial will show you how texturing works in the model side. More importantly Norbert shows us how to create realistic textures and how they fit together in a 3d scene.

I cannot explain why your second scene is so dark at the face you are trying to texture. I do not see any light sources that specifically illuminate that location so the explanation could be as simple as that. Also, might try rendering the scene to see what you have....

If you have any other questions, please ask.

To paint individual paces, open the material editor, load your texture or color and use "paint face." See images below.

As mentioned, you load an image into the material editor first - this is because the image alone doesn't give enough information to paint a face, you also have to set reflectance settings, transparency settings etc. So you assemble all that information in the Material Editor, then apply the entire result to the face.

The Paint Face tool paints individual faces, just click on the ones you want covered with that material using that tool. You can use Point Edit to select faces, then use Paint Faces (one click paints all selected), but generally you just use the tool and click to paint.

You can use the Paint Over Existing Material to replace all faces with the same texture. So you can (and people often do) just paint different faces with a simple shader, one with a different color, to divide up the object, and then go back later to paint over each color with a full shader featuring texture maps, specially set reflectance channel and transparency channel etc.

The same process applies in both the workspace and the Model side, each with their own Material Editor.

For the face which is black, that looks like lighting. The default light set up can leave one side very dark or even black. Try dropping in a new infinite light pointing at that face.

HTH!
