In TS3.2 there was an option to use 'fog' in the rendering process, so that the background faded out to a coloured fog.

I can't seem to find anything like that in 7.6. I can see focal length, but it doesn't really seem to achieve the same thing? Is there a hidden option for this somewhere, or can the same effect be achieved using new tools?

you can do it in the model side in background render options or you could try the Yafaray plugin found here:

i think that has (or will have) a fog background effect

The Fog is broken in the YafaRay plugin at the moment. It's not on the fix list for the next release though, but eventually I'll figure out how to make it work. ;)

The icons are here:

I believe the toolbar is minimized in it's default state, look for a tiny gray chiclet and click it twice to fully expand it.

You have more options than in tS3- there's fog, which has two types, regular and ground. Regular is even throughout the scene, 'ground' has a height parameter which will fade it out the higher you get from the ground plane.
This amount is user-adjustable by increasing the 'height' parameter.

Depth Cue is about the same thing as regular fog except you can't set the color.

Volumetrics is a whole new ball of wax and is used to simulate beams of light streaming through a window, for example. It's best to read up on this before experimenting and keep the scenes simple at first until you get a feel for how to best utilize it. It can be painfully slow if the settings are not optimized. Results can be quite tasty.
There are two flavors here as well, simple and advanced.
Despite the name, advanced is often faster, and gives you a lot more options.

I've also highlighted the quality icon- you'll want to set this on high for getting final renders- this will enable your reflections to show up as well.
